  1. If I were going to get a loan to buy a house, I think this guaranteed no negative equity scheme has to be the best bet by far. As you only have bought the part you have paid for the bank (or government) carries all the downside risk of an HPC. Brilliant. Probably only available to muslims though. Where's the nearest 'king mosque? I'm converting!
  2. You can't smell carbon monoxide, and it is far more dangerous than natural gas or propane allbeit not so spectacular when it kills people.
  3. If I were him I would feel quite smug that I would be getting a half salary, non-contributary pension for life, paid upon leaving office, no matter how badly I ran the country.
  4. There is no fixed "reasonable time" as it is based on the circumstances of each case, safety, inconvenience, the extent of any repair needed, and the effort the landlord has put in with regards to organising a repair are all taken into account.Ultimately It is what a judge considers reasonable, and he doesn't live in the property. There are reams of case law to research, and you should be able to find a ruling on an unacceptable delay for a similar repair. Generally any compensation awarded is often quite low.
  5. There is nothing of architectural merit down The Bishops Avenue.......... or moral come to that.
  6. I notice in the governments statement that they intend to take in mainly women, children and disabled refugees. That will do wonders for the UK's productivity. Meanwhile countries elsewhere will have taken all the qualified and working ones.
  7. Maybe they are rented sites and the LL want too much more rent, or the LA has upped the already stupid business rates. If the landlord takes all your profit why bother to trade?
  8. We have an army of middle ranking civil servants and L A officers making sure it isn't that simple.
  9. At least he didn't knock people that really earned their money, just parasitic lawyers. They must be too rich or stupid not to accept the 42p in the pound offered. I was knocked seveal times by limited companies going into liquidation when I worked in the UK - for real work and materials that I had supplied, and saw bu66er all after the liquidators and lawyers' fees had soaked up any of the remaining assets.
  10. He would have a really long wait if the people that decide to employ his sort actually had some skin in the game.
  11. I will not vote for a party or candidate unless I believe that their policies or promises and past deeds are correct for me and the country. This precludes all those listed in the poll. All politicians and their parties are self-serving, disingenuous bastards whatever their colours.
  12. If they sold these properties surely the mortgages were paid back to the bank. It is a bit of a stretch to say any profit (if the interest and capital has been paid) made on the back of rising prices is a crime. I can think of far worse cases where "errors" or "misdeclarations" often go totally unpunished, like parliamentary expenses for example.
  13. Owning a farm is quite a pleasant and stress free way of life, as long as you don't need to make a living from it.
  14. If you are in Central London then it is cheap. I could not have afforded to do a bathroom refit for that little in town when I was working in the UK, but I had enough of traffic wardens and other hassle so got out. If it is anywhere else, then at first glance it does seem dear but you would need a rough breakdown of costs to decide. Bear in mind professionals get charged for things like waste disposal and the like which a DIYer doesn't. Also if you had a salesman round to sell it to you then you can count on a third of the price you pay being his commission. Get another quote for the same work (but do not mention the first quote to the other guy). Don't use big national bathroom firms either (the likes of Dolphin etc) , as they are the worst. They sell cheap (not to you)bathroom equipment and use any idiot that calls themselves a plumber, tiler, carpenter or bathroom fitter as labour. We put many, many jobs right after these clowns had left, often having to start from scratch again. These customers also had a lot of trouble trying to get their money back, and I don't think many suceeded.
  15. The bankers should have worked out that if the borrower had enough earnings to afford the loan they probably didn't need it anyway.
  16. The remaining portion of a chimney must be properly supported by cantilevering it to the main wall, not " used several 4x2s supported on the floor joists on the first floor to support the weight of the fireplaces on the two floors above" If the chimney breasts have been removed from all rooms they may have also been taken out in the neighbouring property too (which is better). The work if done properly does not adversely affect the building's stability. A modern stove can be served by a twin wall insulated stainless flue system which takes up far less space than a brick chimney would.
  17. They pay next to no tax as it is all accounted away, and the profit does not include generation where the margins are huge. If some but not all companies made a profit on the 2009 figures, one can conclude the others would have made a profit too had they been run properly, and just increasing the cost of supply to consumers to make them profitable was unreasonable. If I were chancellor I would windfall tax any profits not re-invested in the infrastructure. And close the tax loopholes too.
  18. Do Flowers and The Prince of Darkness have more than a couple of things in common I wonder?
  19. It was/is the same in the UK, the dealer can make quite a bit on the finance. A good ruse was to buy a car on credit arranged by the dealer, push them on the headline price and often they would drop the price and increase the trade-in value, hiding their profit in the extortionate finance charges. Take the deal and then pay off the finance completely during the mandatory cooling off period. You win, the dealer loses.
  20. It was not only ironic that his life assurance saved her, but also that his death was almost certainly related to the stress of being in inescapable debt. The banks showed their true colours as usual. It is disgusting how they can support your plans initially then get cold feet halfway through, pull out, and leave you with a half complete business, no income, and a mountain of debt and increasing bank charges. There should be a law that prevents this where an agreement for continued funding for a plan has been made originally. If the bank don't like it, they shouldn't fund it in the first place. I did notice though that her answer for every problem was to go out and buy more stuff.
  21. They havealso laid off a lot of firemen since the early 70's. The increase in use of open fires and woodburners will certainly cause more house fires.
