laurejon Posted November 23, 2007 Posted November 23, 2007 leak from laboratory Interactive: foot and mouth disease Haroon Siddique and agencies Thursday November 22, 2007 Guardian Unlimited There has been a "probable" new leak of foot and mouth disease (FMD) virus at the Merial Animal Health facility at Pirbright, the environment secretary, Hilary Benn, said today. The virus is believed to have escaped through a leaking valve last week but inspectors have been assured the virus has not been released into the environment, Benn said in a Commons written statement. The Pirbright site in Surrey, which also contains the government's Institute for Animal Health, was the source of the initial outbreak of foot and mouth disease in August.
Pent Vaer Posted November 23, 2007 Posted November 23, 2007 That place needs temporarily shutting down. Surprised it hasn't been stormed by farmers with molotov cocktails yet. Pent
sunonmars Posted November 23, 2007 Posted November 23, 2007 That place needs temporarily shutting down. Surprised it hasn't been stormed byfarmers with molotov cocktails yet. Pent but it had been temporarily shut down, it had its licence suspended for 2 months, got it back on Nov 6th and had a leak within a week. What else did you expect from a Govt run facility.
drunkincharge Posted November 23, 2007 Posted November 23, 2007 If I was a nearby farmer I would sacrifice one of my cows hack of its limbs and go and jam them in that tw@t gordos jawlocked mouth.....AAAARGH!! I cant take it anymore >>>!! the stupidity of the people 'incharge' of this country is making me want to commit political class ethnic cleansing. deep breath -0--i'm alright now
lulu Posted November 23, 2007 Posted November 23, 2007 ID Cards will sort this out! No, I think it is all the Tories fault - after all NuLab have only been in power for 10 years how can they get the blame....
General Melchett Posted November 23, 2007 Posted November 23, 2007 I worked there for 3 years as a post doc..... The people try hard, but you really would not believe how chronically underfunded and run down the place is. Really, you wouldnt. Buildings that (even inside) look like one of those movies '25 years after the apocalypse', where the weather has had its way on the fabric of the building for decades with no intervention, you know, ceilings falling in, plaster falling off walls, puddles or rain water inside. One particular gem which shows how dated the facilities are are the doorways marked 'officers' and 'men'. Much as with the military (ibid), the govt likes the idea of having this sort of facility but is simply not prepared to pay for it. Proping up dodgy banks, though, that's different ;-)

General Melchett Posted November 23, 2007 Posted November 23, 2007 This leak is at the commercial company, not a government facility. Yes but..... if I may be so bold.... The commercial facility (for making vaccines) is completely contained within the govt facility (for researching the vaccines and epidemiological surveillance). Dont know about this leak, but the last leak was in the infrastructure (pipe) taking waste to the GOVT RUN treatment plant. Also note that this is not a business with a big return, as we dont vaccinate for FMDV. If I remember rightly, in the time i was there it went through about 3 owners. So blaming the company is a bit like blaming a tennant in a flat because the communal boiler has never been serviced, is 45 years old, and has just blown up..... Very much like, in fact.
KnownUnknowns Posted November 23, 2007 Posted November 23, 2007 That place needs temporarily shutting down. Surprised it hasn't been stormed byfarmers with molotov cocktails yet. Pent Are we talking the laboratory, or the House of Commons? Both equally toxic, I suppose.
jazza Posted November 23, 2007 Posted November 23, 2007 I fail to see how this has anything to do with which party is in government.
General Melchett Posted November 23, 2007 Posted November 23, 2007 I fail to see how this has anything to do with which party is in government. It's a barometer of incompetence, spin over substance, and general head-up-a&*e-ness in the government. Have we heard of these things happening in govt institutions in other countries (ANS: No) Have we heard of these things happening in recent history (ANS - Infrequently in the last half century, covered up leaks at nuclear facilities excepted). That is what it has to do with which party is in power BTW, Im in my 40s, have always voted every chance I get (matter of prinicpal, dear boy - people died so I might vote) and have NEVER voted Tory in my life. This bunch of Broonian t8ss4rs is causing me to reassess this, not that I have any love for the tories, you understand, but meaningful voting (as oppossed to indulgently voting for some no hope party) is a matter of principal for me.
Goldmember Posted November 23, 2007 Posted November 23, 2007 Born into Captivity And that means YOU! The Mogombo Guru of the Daily Reckoning points out that a third of your money, over 33 years, goes towards financial institutions when you take out a pension "savings" plan because of the typically, 1% fees they take from you every single year. Is it any wonder our masters give you back the PAYE portion to herd you into the pension scam. This is before you consider the taxes when you earn it (PAYE, NI, Employers NI and corporation tax which could have gone towards your salary). But you get to pay tax again when you draw your pension and let's not forget the hidden inflation tax which has been almost 7% annually over the long run (more if you consider M4 money supply and asset price inflation), or the fact that over 80% of funds underperform the market. Then when you spend it there's VAT not to mention the 67% for fuel duty the council tax and even taxes on essentials such as fuel (one of Ghandis protest was against the tax on salt when it was readily available on the sea shore). Then when you die they steal from your kids taking 40% in inheritance tax from the money you've already paid so many taxes on. And let's not forget that, like the 20 year old blonde that marries a billionaire, the pension provider keeps even more of the money pot when you die. It becomes clear that the Iraq war is about petrodollars, that petrodollars is about allowing the US to inflate without a dollar collapse and that inflation is to feed the financial sector so that they can fleece you with bogus returns on investment scams. The UK financial sector is supposed to be 10% of GDP whilst in the US it's 20%. Herr Braun, our unelected dictator has taken us to war (whilst using Bliar as a scapegoat) charging us £4bn in taxes to fund it in order to rip us off via the financial sector. He has gifted taxes to the financial sector via scams such as the "Baby Bond" just as Bliar gifted £10m to the trade unions for "modernisation" even though they're private interest groups (who just happen to pay £6m in bribes to Nu Labour). It becomes clear that our unelected masters are the farmers and that we are the spineless chickens that get our eggs stolen, the supine sheep that are fleeced and the stupid cows that get milked and then when we die we are carved up for our meat. The state pension is, of course, chicken feed and whilst pensioners who have lost their pension through no fault of their own are told to go and eat cake, Northern Rock receives £24bn when its directors were highly irresponsible. Northern Rock is just the start. Is it any wonder that Michael Howard claimed the Tories would have thought up a better excuse for the Iraq War. This was a sales pitch not intended for the UK voter but for the true voters in the US. Judge Andrew Napolitano writes in his book, "A Nation of Sheep", "[T]he Bush Administration has systematically attacked and diminished virtually every freedom and right guaranteed by the Constitution: freedom of speech, freedom of the press, freedom of religion, freedom of association, the right to privacy, the right not to self incriminate, the right to counsel, the right to speedy trials, the right to fair trials, the right to avoid cruel and unusual punishment, even the right to be set free after acquittal! . . . . " We sheep have had this totalitarianism imposed on us with stories about the big bad wolf. In the film, Spartacus, they try to intimidate the crowd and demand that they give up Spartacus (Kirk Doublas). But after Spartacus reveals himself, others then defy their oppressors also claiming, "I am Spartacus". THAT'S how you deal with restrictions on freedom of speech!!! You don't give way.

IMHAL Posted November 23, 2007 Posted November 23, 2007 I agree whole heartedly with your sentiment. However it is not just Brown - it was also B'liar. This Labour government with their so called socialist principles that have been re-distribute tax payers funds to a couple of classes of people: - Chavs and single mothers (they are dislocating society) - The political elite - Doctors and GP In addition they have helped the wealthy escape taxes - can you f;in believe it !!!! They have spent countless billions on unjust wars, more public servants (on the pretence that if you spend more you get more - yer right!), and too numerous to mention cocked up IT system and crazy projects that are straight out of cockoo land. This government are a bunch of monkeys playing with guns - its just a matter of time before they all shoot themselves in the foot. I am sick of Browns standard defense of economic growth - a truly capable person would make that claim when the times get tough and then steer a path out of it - and not when we have global low interest rates and then to take the credit for that - he is a sick man. In any case he is only responsible for puting this nation in debt pernuary for at least a generation - just wait till the econamy turns really nasty then the knives with really come out HAL

Proping up dodgy banks, though, that's different ;-) There is a research installation in Cambridge that excatly the same. Basically WW2 nissen huts riddled with damp, rot and asbestos. Now being demolished thank God. Re the propping up dodgy banks, every now and again a story come along that reminds me (in spite of all the lip service paid to how lucky we are in the West have our freedoms) that when push comes to shove the power in this country is wielded by the moneyed elite for the benefit of the moneyed elite. The rest of us are drones to be tolerated. Even better, one of the other threads has now found that a good chunk of NR assets are actually offshore in Jersey. Look hard enough there will be Isle of Man, British Virgin Islands and Nevis companies in there too. If you could follow the trials you will find the same names coming up: Rothschild, Mellon et al. This will come to no-one in the game as a surprise. And Darling game them 25Bn quid while theres children dying tight now for want of a clean drink of water. It make me fscking mad.
