BirdofPrey
Of course they are - the worst kind. You don't have to prove that you don't own a fishing rod to avoid needing a licence so why do you have to prove you don't own a telly? Because television is the new "soma", and the authorities cannot understand that someone might be able to live a happy and fulfilled life without it. The expectation therefore is that you must be in possession of a TV or like device. Incidentally can you imagine the civil disturbance that would occur if the masses were not being entertained by TV and were outside on the streets instead? lets get it right
Noel's stand was polite but provocative. He didn't say he still had a TV - but even so the maximum fine is £1000 isn't it? The maximum penalty for television licence evasion is a fine of £1,000 plus costs. There is no power to imprison a person for television licence evasion, although the courts have a power to imprison fine defaulters. In 2002, a total of 14 people (2 women and 12 men) in England and Wales were imprisoned for default on fines for television licence evasion. 6538
In France, as I've mentioned before, the TV license is lumped in with the local council tax. You can claim a rebate if you do not have a TV.Why people are so vexed about the TV license when billions are wasted on illegal wars and wasted elsewhere by central and local government is beyond me. I wasn't commenting on the TV licence, as such, just about the way the law regarding it is enforced. The idea that a state official (well a sort of one) should set in motion what is, effectively, a criminal investigation of an individual based on absolutely no evidence what so ever of any crime having been comitted is abhorrent. There is no other situation where the state actively investigates individuals without first having evidence. Can you imagine the outrage that would be caused if the government announced that it was going to send "enforcement officers" round to everyones house to search for drugs, guns, porn, etc, on the basis of zero evidence? What about the tax authorities deciding to turn up and inventory everything in your house in case you had something valuable you might decide to sell and evade the capital gains tax on, or to look for evidence of undeclared income? TV licence enforcement is an absolute outrage.
patprimer74
As a result, he has stopped paying his TV licence and nobody has come knocking on his door yet. Does anyone remember this has-been offering support to non-licence payers when he was earning zillions from the very BBC he now criticises (after they've dropped him and his Mr Blobby, of course!) "Fings ain't wot they used to be when I were a lad - I can tell you!" Pathetic! p
The Masked Tulip
Noel Edmonds on BBC News this a.m. I always thought he was a bit of a pretty boy airhead but after an interview on the Beeb this morning, he has soared in my estimation. Basically, politicians have had their day; they have had their chance and look at the mess they have got us into. This is no longer the country it was. It's time for non-politicians to take the reins. He is pushing sixty, says he has always been a law abiding citizen but is now pretty sure he breaks some law or other each day because you can't keep up with them all anymore. BBC used to be a fine organisation but now they are bullies - as in "we know where you are - it's all in the database". As a result, he has stopped paying his TV licence and nobody has come knocking on his door yet. To say that on live TV is quite something. He spoke with what seemed like genuine passion and principle about what is going on in this country. I have not heard any celebrity talk in this way on TV. It is quite an eye opener if anyone can find the link to it.A damning indictment on Auntie Beeb with boxing gloves. Here it is: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/7614330.stm Good on him. More of us need to do start standingu p for the country we once had instead of whinging about it being taken over or becoming something that we despise. Right, off to book my tickets overseas! Elizabeth
Easily impressed aren't you?Like the Generals for example? "Bullies" for wanting to collect the licence fee. Please, poor victim. Unfortunately the BBC lately has far deeper and more disturbing faults, none of which will concern the repellant Mr Edmonds. Yes. Bullies for wanting to collect a licence fee to watch any station at all. I would be quite happy not to watch the BBC and use a television to watch commercial stations but I don't have a choice and quite frankly for the cost of it what precisely do they deliver but a rambling network of nothing special and anything that is special that could just as easily be sold through commercial stations. The BBC should be limited to innovative programmes and kids stuff. How would it be if Waitrose struck a deal with the government whereby I had to pay a licence that was then passed on to them to promote organic foods amongst the rest that they sell, so that I had the right to shop at ASDA? Elizabeth
Noel has had more than his fair share of that licence fee money over the years So all the people who could protest against the licence fee are made complicit in its collection, by being paid off, leaving those of us who object to it isolated and marginalised by our lack of access to the media. I forgive you Noel. Go for it.

brumroccoco
I have all the technological nous of a door mouse, so no idea whether this would work. But when the UK is wholly digital by 2012, would the tech allow the BBC to 'turn off' transmission of their stations to households without a licence? This would make the licence an opt-in/opt-out service & a lot fairer to everyone. As an aside, I too thought it was a tad hypocritical of Noel and I would've had more respect for him if he'd made his call whilst still at the BBC. However, this would've been problematic for him as if I recall correctly it's BBC policy to summarily dismiss an employee who operates a TV without a licence Edit: Spelling Edited September 13, 2008 by brumroccoco

dances with sheeple
Glad someone else has noticed that. I flicked through all the digital channels the other night, and all were showing adverts at the same time. Will have to read Noel's text in full but good on him, but the cynic in me suggests he is about to plug something. And you`re surprised? Come on guys, did you think TV was there to enlighten you, to expand your mind? It`s there to steal your soul and make you consume and think like a good little sheep. As I`ve said before, the Keith Moon treatment is the best thing for a TV.

Wish I could. Bet you do, too. I would be happy to settle for a refund of the amounts already paid. Unlike Noel I really don't think that I get a good deal from the BBC. And I really don't like to be told who I have to deal with either. That is what I object to most about the BBC. It is not a train line Noel, it is not a bicycle track, it is the media and I can choose and would like the opportunity to choose other than to pay for the BBC or not be allowed to choose anything.
