I think the site should be as encouraging as possible to guests and lurkers and cetainly not put them at a different level and should be doing everything possible to get people to post - regardless of bullish/bearish bias. Fresh blood is very good for a site, you never know who's views you are likely to miss and what information you may miss out on.

However if people are making multiple registrations and effectively using that mechanism to disrupt/piss take or genreally not add anything cosntructive (of either view) then this should be stamped on. Not sure what this BB software has on offer in regards to IP comparison to make such a thing more dfficult.

Innocent until proven guilty.

Andrew McP

Agreed, the presumtion should be that a person is not a troll unless proven otherwise.

It is not unreasonable to monitor newbies to ensure that they are not reincarnations of existing trolls, pre-modding newbie's topics would be one way of minimising the disruption.

I don't agree. It would make the site inaccessible to newbie’s.

Think of the threads as TV channels, if you don't like it turn over.

The true solution to the trolling problem is to avoid feeding them.

If a statement is truly outlandish just let it be, have faith that people will see it for what it is.

You can see which threads are popular by the number of the responses; these are generally the more worthwhile debates.

Jumping on posts early with accusations of trolling and awooga sirens doesn't come across well.

How will Young Goat's proposal make the site inaccessible to Newbies? The suggestion was to prevent Newbies from starting new topics until they had reached X number of posts. There has been no suggestion that Newbies should be allowed to post - now that would be silly.

Personally I find the trollish posts very amusing, but it must be a total nightmare for the mods. In the end, it's up to them.

Excellent point you made though - if you don't like it, don't read it...

Perhaps a new rating option of "Troll" should be added to the thread rating list.

I'm worried about this forum, and beginning to agree with LondonLandlady when she said AWOOGA = Anyone With Opposing Opinion Go Away.

I agree – If you have an opposing opinion then you are just labelled as a troll

This was started today and immediately moved to the sub troll forum

"Is this the beginning of a rise in house prices and will it be infectious to the rest of the country? I certainly hope so as property is my main form of income, the long slump in the market did not have me worried but i was starting to pay really, really, really close attention, i still haven't taken my eye off the ball but i have exhaled a bit. Will it continue to grow? What do you think?

Annansi"

I don’t think that Annansi is a troll – but just another viewpoint – and perhaps worthy of a debate (although I have not seen any of his other posts)

Well you have not been labelled a troll and you admit you have a VI in rising house prices, another one who should get a grip

I suspect that the mods moved Annansi because this is another multiple id, something that us members can't see (perhaps they could add an "alias" section to the profile)

Annansi looks very much like a troll to me, it just doesn't seem natural that your first post is to start a new topic with what looks like a cut and paste of VI spin.

Quite right, Only Me,

i joined in september 05 and am not brave enough, (or clever enough), to post often, but i live day to day as a guest on the site and it boosts my confidence in the hpc. i'd be slightly offended if i were not allowed to join in , cos real trolls are easy to spot after a few posts.

the troll sub forum is a fantasic development tho, a bit like an endangered species pen in a zoo. i have images of scientifically trained troll feeding specialists desperately trying to keep them from dying out.

it would be a shame if they did..troll spotting is part of this forum's way of life. as long as they are caught early and safely transferred to their special place of safety they won't do too much damage. let's look after them..bless'em.

How ridiculous.

I see a troll on here being anyone that does not agree with the views on property expressed by the majority of people on these boards.

So, lets ban everyone that has opposing views shall we.

If your not adult enough to make a coinstructive counter argument, ignore the post or both without getting angry that the views differ from your own then you need to grow up.

If you look at the title of the main forum you will see that it reads "The main discussion forum on house prices" - discussion being the operative word.

What makes me laugh on boards that discuss anything financial is how two sided they always are - there will be a crash and anyone trying to make money from property is a fool against well I'm still making some money and things are fine in my garden. No middle ground.

Think it's time to grow up and stop thinking you really do have a crystal ball and the answers to all questions in the universe.

With the number of trolls we have had recently can I suggest that newbies are prevented from posting new topics until they have reached regular status (35 posts I think).

If not barred, can they be pre-modded to weed out the obvious trolls?

This may discourage trolls but it will also discourage genuine FTBs who want to express views or need our advise. It would also make us appear like an unpenetratable club (think the posh golf club).

I think we are all big enough and ugly enough to handle a few trolls (and IMO there are only a few).

No objection to opposing viewpoints however I am fed up with people logging on under multiple id's with the express intent of disrupting the forum, there have been two today already.

If you own property does that mean you have an automatic vested interest in there not being a property crash

If not what is a vested interest?

If you do have a vested interst in this way does this mean your views should automatically be discounted?

transparency of the market is very important, but you wont get that from the BBC,EA's etc they only spout out fantasy opinion. The same goes for all those quote monkey econonomists that some of you persist in winding up,they are not worth it,they know nothing. If they did they would not have to grind out a living quoting crap, they would be too busy backing they're OWN opinions.

Let this board represent what IS actually happening out there, use your heads to work out WHY there is an increase in 'trollish' posts, work out what that might mean in terms of where we are at with this market. The call to ban these types is an emotive one,I suggest more use of the head instead of the heart.I can get so much more from the 'emotions' aired on this board(bullish or bearish)than from any second rate 'news' release.

I think the effect of trolls is actually to discourage genuine new posters for fear of being labelled trolls themselves.

If the newbie threads are pre-modded then we can have some confidence that they are genuine, as things stand any bullish threads from newbies are likely to be met with an awooga rather than a response.

BTW I see we have another one in the form of Mario Caves.

Yeah, he/she/it's quiet the comedian!

I'm just worried we will put genuine posters off by not welcoming all newbies, some can be quite nervous especially if they haven't used a forum before (it took me 18 months after I found this site to start posting on HPC).

We have quite strong views on this site and will always be a target for Trolls, I think it is best to manage it rather than legislate. I personally am not concerned about looking like a fool for replying or falling for a trolls line but I do get disappointed when AWOOGA is shouted simply because someone is a bull.

EDIT: Pressed the post button too soon!

Although it's not completely fail-safe, with DHCP (random IP addresses allocated from a set pool) someone might be unfortunate to get an address of someone who had been trolling.

Although on second thoughts, that might be a good thing as it gets rid of two trolls for the price of one IP!

Yep - my IP address rolls and therefore changes minute to minute.

I don't want to discourage newbies, just delay thier threads for a couple of minutes until the mods can check that suspect ones are not multiple id's.

As I said, I think the trolls scare off newbies by making other posters seem hostile to them.

No problem with bullish posts but we are getting some obvious multiple registrations with the intent of disrupting the site.

50p says annansi and Frank Cannon are one and the same.

OMG another idiot! Yeah right and I am one of multiple personalities too! Accused for having nothing but an opinion and discussion with other posters....

I suggest anyone with GOAT in the name should be barred from posting!

I think expecting the mods to pre-mod every newbie thread is asking a bit much, but your original suggestion might be a good compromise. But it's probably best to just ignore anyone you think is trolling, rather than rising to the bait.

The chances of that happening is millions to one! I think IP addys should be used to highlight these mythical multiple posters!

Are you suggesting that there are not multiple registrations on this site?

Annansi, Frank Cannon and Mario caves look suspiciously like one and the same.
