knock out johnny
As the title says I've got a pcspecialist laptop which came with windows 8.1 preinstalled and with a disk from pcspecialist. I accidently wiped windows installing ubuntu and now when I try and reinstall windows 8.1 it's asking for an activation key, which from my understanding is now stored in the BIOS and not on a sticker etc I'm running ubuntu and any of the utilities mentioned in google are windows applications - Help!! interestrateripoff
Are you trying to reinstall Windows 8.1 from a DVD or the restore folder? I'm wondering if the version of Windows you are trying to install isn't one that activates via the bios.
thecrashingisles
Can't you bypass the activation during the install and say you'll activate online later? If it's in the bios then Windows should pick it up automagically once it's installed.

Deft
I would have thought PCSpecialist would just be using standard OEM copies of Win8.1, which means you should get the OEM install disc and hopefully they have placed the license key sticker somewhere on your laptop. MrPin
It s probably on a sticker in the battery box.
dinker
It is simpler to use the excellent Daz Loader to activate Win 7 rather than a product key.

oracle
It is simpler to use the excellent Daz Loader to activate Win 7 rather than a product key. i've seen that before. it's good. especially when win7,even with a legit key(brand new and bought oem in the cases I stated) comes up with that awful build7601 message. don't know why that happens, but online activation comes up with this error all the time.
