What I can't understand is why this isn't driving investment in the North East. Beautiful part of the country, cheap property, good potential workforce. What gives?

Do you live in Bishop Auckland?

Would be good to pick your brains a bit at some point if it's not too much trouble?

Judging from your name you probably know the area a lot better than I do. It's one of the places in Durham I've been looking at recently (after years waiting I'm about to give up and buy somewhere - and it's one of the few parts of the country where it might be within my means to do so outright).

I used to live in Consett some lovely houses around that area of Co Durham and towards the north of the county. Lanchester is also quite nice, although more expensive due to it's proximity to Durham city.

You're all throwing £380,000 (US $620,000) around like it's nothing. 2004 indeed.

And for a 1920s/1930s, pretty standard house (ugly rear) in Country Durham, that's costly to heat, maintain, and needs a bit of updating inside. Also on a 1/4m RIghtmove search, mostly surrounded by lower end terraces/semis (partial value.. but not enough to rush and set up a business in area to me).

£380,000 buys you a nice house in areas surrounded by good schools, and many other such nice houses, in top end areas - in other locations. Not just a scattering of such houses from the old days, in a more challenged area.

What are the running costs on something like that in France? Council tax equivalent? Equivalent to stamp duty? I've always fancied moving to France and I think my French is just about good enough. What's the local attitude towards foreigners?

This is what £380k buys in my part of the world but like Co Durham there is no well paid work but on the plus side the sun shines for more than 2 weeks every year:

The below properties are what you can get where my parents are currently living (retired). Unfortunately houses are so cheap there, that getting one house for £325k is not possible, so you can get any 3 of the below houses for the same price as 1 in Bath:

The below houses are around £100k each:

You would need an income stream that meant no need to have paid employment but generally the cost of running something like the place I posted are less than in the UK. For Example, I occupy 80m2 of 300m2 buildings that I own and 5 acres of land and my council tax is less than £1k pa and I get my bins emptied every week. Electricity and water are less than in the UK and the locals are pleased that people are prepared to maintain old buildings that would otherwise fall down and also bring in money that helps maintain local services.

And there, for most people, is the rub.
