A BBC Radio 5 live investigation found sites where hackers exchanged pictures and videos of people captured on their own webcams without their knowledge. A police spokeswoman said webcam hackers would be prosecuted. But some experts have expressed doubts on how widespread the practice is, and stressed that anti-virus software plays a vital role in preventing it. .. Student Rachel Hyndman, 20, from Glasgow, who has a part-time job in a computer shop, believes she was the victim of webcam hacking. She spotted the camera on her laptop had switched itself on while she was watching a DVD in the bath. She says: "I was sitting in the bath, trying to relax, and suddenly someone potentially has access to me in this incredibly private moment and it's horrifying. "To have it happen to you without your consent is horribly violating." Watching a DVD in the bath.... I'm not sure where to begin with this sensitive electrical components in a moisture rich atmosphere..... Clearly she has the right job working in a computer shop. Finally, they chuck a few hundred million to Bill Gates to ensure the job of accessing most of the planet's computers remains a piece of piss for the next financial year. I've always done this with webcams regardless of the operating system I use. It's a very low probability that someone else would gain access to your webcam without you knowing it of course, but why take the risk when the cost of avoiding it is so tiny? Yeah, that's pretty much how I imagine it. XYY The one I genuinely worry about is backdoors embedded in hardware made in China. In principle, it would not be at all hard to arrange things so that the Chinese government could access pretty much any piece of computer kit on the planet if there was a clear Chinese-made path from start to finish (routers, switches, network cards, USB drivers, USB I/O devices). This would pose a conundrum to the authorities as to whether you should be prosecuted under Section 66 of the Sexual Offences Act 2003 for Exposure or the hacker should be charged under Section 67 of the of the Sexual Offences Act 2003 for Voyeurism.
