billy-g
I agree with you 100%; those have to be bullsh!t figures. Sadly, there are some on here who actually WISH for a recession, and to see honest working people out of work. I think that's why I laugh when I hear the politicians tell me that we need further immigration into this country. Really? Not enough competition for jobs at them moment then? Or houses - they seem to get priority for Local Authority housing stock, hence pushing other folks into buying overpriced property that they cant afford. Someones talking mince somewhere I think in politician land
SarahBell
Intriguing isn't it. Almost like the media is lying to us. But that'd never happen... would it? Don't they put you on some scary course thing which guarantees you a job once you've been out of work for 6 months? That helps reduce the figures. Someones talking mince somewhere I think in politician land Immigration is required in the UK to keep unions and inflation at bay. There are two types of immigrants, the educated ones that emmigrate to AUS and the US FROM the UK, and the piss poor ones from Albania etc that immigrate TO to UK. The government wants the piss poor ones to keep a lid on inflation - this ain't going to work anymore as inflation is being pushed up by raw materials not labor costs. If immigration slows - then the folks here are going to want more money pushing inflation up. Edited October 12, 2005 by Pluto

Marina
Well I am going to have to be politically incorrect again. I attended a memorial service for an old friend recently that necessitated me going back to where I grew up in West London. I got there early and had time for a walk around the town centre. I would be interested to take a complete stranger, drop them down into the town centre and say 'which country are you in?' Because you couldn't tell. Every race and nation on earth must be represented there. Is that what people want? The whole country to be the fabled 'melting pot'? Now I wouldn't mind if the place was vibrant and colourful etc. But it isn't. It is a complete dump. Talking to people who still live there I said 'I went up the town earlier - I didn't recognise the place.' To a man and woman people who still live there said 'It's horrible living here now. You wouldn't want to walk around there after dark now. What??? Can't walk round my home town centre after dark? Sorry to all you politically correct wallies - but I am buggered if I can see how mass immigration benefits anyone. I am the son of immigrants. My parents came here for a better life. They didn't come here to try to re-create the lives and countries they left behind. All mass immigration does is create ghettoes and provide an endless supply of cheap labour. And, to nip back to the subject for a second, I don't believe any government statistics. Every day there is news of thousands of jobs being lost. I can't remember the last time I saw a headline that said 'XYZ to open new factory creating X hundred jobs' etc. Of course, the government don't announce their ongoing attempt to employ everyone in the country. It just happens. Edited October 12, 2005 by Marina
right_freds_dead
this proves that we can have a housing correction WITHOUT a failing economy. even if the figures are correct - houses still fall. this happened in 1989. there were no massive layoffs like in 1981. jackalope
There are two types of immigrants, the educated ones that emmigrate to AUS and the US FROM the UK, and the piss poor ones from Albania etc that immigrate TO to UK. This has very worrying long term demographic implications, if you think about it. The population of the UK is growing only slightly but the immigration requirements of Australia or elsewhere means that the ones who are leaving are educated or skilled, mostly young or young-ish, healthy and have no criminal record. Contrast that with the ones coming in to replace them...
erd
Claimant count unemployment rose by 8,200 to 875,500. The monthly figure was more than double than predicted by analysts, while August's rise was revised higher to 2,700 from 1,600 previously. So on top of the headline figure of an 8200 rise, 900 were tacked onto last months figure

Our Health Service couldn't function without half the third world here running it for us. Mind you, it gets twice as much money as 1997 and it's still a joke ... maybe we need some good old-fashioned ENGLISH matrons on board. ENGLISH as in 'having the qualities of an English matron'. I've said it on other threads and I'll say it again - 'when a close relative was dying in hospital recently I would have liked, just occasionally, to speak to someone in charge whose first language was English.' The person in question had private medical insurance and was sometimes in a private hospital and sometimes in the local NHS hospital. Due to the nature of his illness he had many visits over some months. I kept bumping into staff and saying 'hello' and then saying 'I thought you worked in the BUPA hospital' ... 'Yes, work there and work here.' A lot of staff in the NHS seem to have two jobs. Need or greed I wonder?

The report says that unemployment has risen, (by claimant count) but that unemployment has fallen. What it should is unemployment has risen, (by claimant count) but employment has also risen. This is misleading because unemployment has not fallen...employment has risen...this is not the same thing. The bottom line is that unemployment has risen (people who were previoulsy in work and are now not and claiming benefit) but employment has also risen (people who were not previoulsy in work/claiming unemployment benefit e.g housewives, single parents, school leavers etc) Edited October 12, 2005 by 2005
Michael
Something the politically correct won't acknowledge is ''white flight'' ...........where all but the poorest and least employable white english people abandon an area for the suburbs or commuter towns...... People I know in the South East even joke about white flight to the West Country....... Middle class Londoners using schools as an excuse usually leave inner london for the likes of St Albans and Guildford as soon as kids come along....Europeans even in polite converstion are a less politically correct saying they're leaving the city becuse of the ''foreigner problem''
ILBB
http://news.independent.co.uk/uk/crime/article318866.ece Gang held over smuggling 100,000 Turks into Britain "The gang is thought to have been operating for several years before police became aware of its activities" So you can smuggle 100,000 Turkish Kurds into Northern London (or 200,000 as the non British EuroNews claims) before anyone notices. You couldn't make it up!
billy-g
Marina, you are a breath of fresh air. I agree with you wholeheartedly, and I am not ashamed to say so. For me, the turning point was the Kriss Donald murder last year up here. 5 Asian men beat and stab a 15 year old white boy to death because his FRIEND got off with an Asian girl at a school disco, and as they couldn't find the actual boy, they grab Kriss... His mutilated, burned body was found the next day, only after passers by realised it was not a dog carcass they were looking at. Why does all this wind me up? Because the police go on record saying that it was NOT a racist murder. Change Asian to white in the previous statement, and think if that'd still have been the same statement. Steven Lawrence's parent got an MBE for there "Dignity", what did Kriss's mother recieve? Nothing. So far, not even justice. If you have nothing to offer this society, and dont wish to integrate and live by our laws, go back to Crapistan. You'll not be missed. Just dont expect us to forward your benefit payments or you hospital appointment cards though.
ILBB
Something the politically correct won't acknowledge is ''white flight'' You're spot on (though very unPC) and there's no doubt that 'white flight' out of London and other major urban areas is influencing HPI in the nicer parts of Yorkshire. FTBagain
A lot of staff in the NHS seem to have two jobs. Need or greed I wonder? Marina, It is NEED. The pay sucks. Most of the staff in the NHS are vocational people. They do the job because they care about people. How do I know, because my wife worked in the NHS for years. Struggled to bring up to kids on her own , working as a nurse when she could have been better off on benefits!! She is not unusal. The pay is so bad that it is impossible to employ enough 'English'. They simply will not work for such poor pay! Hence we need to asset strip third world countries of there hard won medical experise, because even our rotten pay is better than what they could earn at home and when you are youg and single you can live cheaply (in some rotten bedsit making a BTL rich). Rant over. Back to the unemployment data. Watch the claiment count, that is the one that will hurt Gordon B's balance of payment hard. Flash
Unemployment down? The UK economy is obviously going gangbusters. Perhaps the MPC should raise interest rates to cool it off a little.
bears all
The figures appear to be explicable only if the workforce is expanding, ie the numbers of people eligible for unemployment benefit and the numbers of people in work are both on the up. Can someone put some numbers on it and tell us by how much? I find the figures very surprising. There seem to be job losses all over the papers, and I actually know two people made redundant recently, one of them in the pharamaceutical industry, the first time in years this has happened to me. I'm uncomfortable with those playing the race card on this forum, and I'd prefer to talk in terms of culture. IMO immigration is good for the UK only in very rare circumstances; but although those on the liberal left like to point out that net immigration is quite small (because lots of people leave the country as well) they are reluctant to face the fact that no-one can be absolutely sure how many people are coming in (as today's people-smuggling story makes clear) and that those leaving tend to be disaffected whites whereas those coming tend to be from the poorer areas of Eastern Europe and all points south and east. All of which means that the ethnic and cultural mix in this country is moving slowly but inexorably away from the post-Christian secularism and towards Islamic religious zealotry. Is this a good idea?

This is where a person holds a belief and only takes notice of evidence that supports that belief whilst disregarding any evidence that contradicts it. Also don't forget that the majority of workers are employed in small firms and they also do most of the job creation as well. As they are small firms we do not often (ever?) see a headline like '15000 jobs to be created at small family-run firm'. The headline (were there to be one) would be 'local firm recruits one person to cope with increase in orders'. This does not sell newspapers however. Having said that I do believe we are sliding into a recession similar to the one in the early 90s. A good indicator is the state of the temp job market as the first thing a business does in a slowdown is cut the temps / contractors that they brought in to cope with the extra demand. Anyone know what the temp market is like at the moment?

Marina
I believe that you may be suffering from what is termed 'confirmation bias'. This is where a person holds a belief and only takes notice of evidence that supports that belief whilst disregarding any evidence that contradicts it. Okay, hands up to that. In my defence my distorted view of the world is provided by the media. As you say jobs are being created but the media I look at is not reporting them. Not withstanding my admission of guilt, all of us react to our perception of the world around us. Quite a few of the jobs you listed are supermarket jobs and an import centre - they are mainly low paid and they are all about goods we import. Can't see they do our economy much good. The slowdown in consumer spending means only one thing - recession. It's going to be a hard couple of years with a lot of unemployment to come.
