Doctor Gloom
Not HPC related but interesting none the less. Amazing how this boring yet non essential display group isn't mentioned in government cuts. dubsie
It is essential, it's about training elite fighter pilots. Our airforce might be small but it is considered one of the most feared in the world. As an island we need to be able to defend ourselves. Bruce Banner
This country doesn't have many things that are admired around the world, but the Red Arrows are one of them. tahoma
Poll: Should the Red Arrows bomb the Welsh Assembly, so the land can be used for something more meaningful? They ripped over me and two of our horses at 200 feet last year. I expected the nags to go apesh*t but I think they were quite impressed. Guillotine
Bit of an anachronism isnt it, and all that coloured smoke can't but contribute to MMGC.

Amazing how this boring yet non essential display group isn't mentioned in government cuts. Smoke-on-GO The aircraft are standard RAF trainers so I assume that the cost of them is already in the RAF training budget Apparently all the overseas tours are fully paid for by the sponsors so they cost the taxpayer nothing In truth they are brand advertising for the UK arms industry and the Hawk jet in particular Whether you think that is a good use of public money I suppose really depends on your views on arms trading and its net contribution to the UK economy http://www.raf.mod.uk/reds/faqs.cfm
Frank Hovis
Totally disagree. I like that we have some things in this country that are still special even if non-essential. That's why I am glad that we retain a royal family. If you go too far down that MP's road you'll end up turning Buckingham Palace into flats. Smoke-on-GO How about we run a national survey on how many people enjoy and support the Red Arrows, and how many enjoy and support S4C (welsh language TV) ... ... and then abolish S4C anyway? mitchbux
It is essential, it's about training elite fighter pilots. Our airforce might be small but it is considered one of the most feared in the world. As an island we need to be able to defend ourselves. I went to the Bournemouth Air Festival last year. The Red Arrows were dull viewing, but the RNAF F16 throwing out anti-missile flares was a sight to behold. Our helicopter and parachute display teams were impressive though. Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Get rid of the army, navy, air force and get a civil defence force. Stop eroding our standard of living with your never ending wars (has Britain ever had a year of peace since end WW2?). The military-industrial complex in all its glory. Trouble is the sheeple go along with it all (hardly surprising considering all the by-jingo media brainwashing) Edited January 3, 2011 by gruffydd
Protect Rural England
How much money is wasted in Wales on new Highway Agency road signs in Welsh and English? How much money is wasted having a Welsh Assembly? How much money is wasted promoting Wales as a place to do business? How much money is wasted defending Wales? How much money was wasted on the 2 Severn Bridges? The list is endless. Tell the illigetimate Son of Glendower to stick his opinion into Offa's Dyke. If you didn't know, S4C came in because they were worried about the potential for civil conflict in Wales after Gwynfor Evans went on Hunger Strike. Things were very edgy here then, and still are just below the surface.

MarkG
This country doesn't have many things that are admired around the world, but the Red Arrows are one of them. All air forces have display teams, they are a major recruiting aid. The RAF hardly needs recruiting aids when it's scrapping most of its aircraft... from what military aircrew have said on other forums, there are now far more RAF pilots in training than there are jobs for them. However, scrapping them would be kind of pointless when it would save about the same amount of money in a year that the NHS pisses away in an hour.
