Shame that outside of the UK, zebra or indeed any type of crossing is rigorously ignored by drivers until you actually step out in front of them?

Zebra crossings. As you approach a zebra crossing

  • look out for pedestrians waiting to cross and be ready to slow down or stop to let them cross
  • you MUST give way when a pedestrian has moved onto a crossing
  • allow more time for stopping on wet or icy roads
  • do not wave or use your horn to invite pedestrians across; this could be dangerous if another vehicle is approaching
  • be aware of pedestrians approaching from the side of the crossing

A zebra crossing with a central island is two separate crossings (see Rule 20).

Note the MUST.

In parts of the UK I find people tend to drive to the MUST, in others much more sensitive.

Italy is just full of *****, arseholes and idiots, backing up your assertion... :)

Perhaps one is but you just can't see it?

You could see a cross zebra crossing though!

Is middle 'C' - in the middle of the road?

Zebra crossings are just dangerous. As a pedestrian you are scared to walk on to them when cars are coming in case they dont notice the crossings and dont stop. As a driver, you get worried approaching them in case someone darts out onto them and you have to slam on the brakes. As jaywalking is legal in the uk its safer just to find a quieter bit of road to cross or find a pedestrian crossing controlled by traffic lights.

But i do like the look of the zebra crossing with the piano keys. Its amazing how a small piece of creativity can brighten up a dull street. Councils in the UK should take note.
