Another fun comparison of UK prices and those abroad.

Last time I showed an exclusive £1,250,000 villa in the Vancouver area vs a £1,450,000 home in Beaconsfield. Today we're going more downmarket.

Here's Beaconsfield again, a 4 bedroom new build and yours for a bargain £960,000 (link):

In comparison, here's a 7 bedroom, 9 bathroom home in Flower Mound, Texas for the same price. Too 'hotel foyer' for my own tastes, but if we're talking bang for buck...

This is a foreclosed property I believe, but if you think is an exception, check out other properties in the area from the listings link.

A millions pounds for a bog-standard house in Hertfordshire. Am I the only one on this site who thinks property in Britain is overpriced?

I think a couple of people might agree ;)

Nice.

I thought the kitchen looked a little lacking in cupboard space until I realised that's the outside barbeque in the cabana. Beats a few bricks with a medal griddle on the top.

I wonder if it is still standing after the hurricanes?

Another cr4p thread with unfair comparisons...

How about comparing running costs between the American property and the UK property..

In the UK you only pay council tax, but in the US you pay property tax, so goddam expensive that it is the reason that all the americans houses are defaulting...

Depends were you are. Friend of mine lived in Nebraska and Colorado. Colorado was significantly less than here, nebraska significantly more. If we actually had proper local government like the US i suspect something similar would have to happen here.

Depends where you are in the UK, these are in the midlands and more reserved/less 'new rich'. Im sure you could buy a castle for alot less than 800k if you searched all over the uk.

yours for 800

Infact why not ask 20% below asking, they might even go for 600->700k?

Maybe you missed the bit where I said it was a "fun" comparison.

Tell you what, we'll let you have the new build below in Beaconsfield instead - £235,000 more than the Texas one (that's adjusting for an awful lot of property tax).

Good finds Moose, and yes you can buy castles here for 800K (in Scotland at least). May need a bit of work on them though. ;)

I think its a great post. Apart from showing in stark contrast what the equivalent money can buy, it makes one think about the factors that value a property. Looks like we can just about discount the quality of the fittings and sq footage from these examples.

One of the main causes in the price difference is the speculative premium. In the UK people buy a house in the belief they can sell it on at a profit and it doesn't matter what you pay because you can always sell it for more.

A house like the one in Texas reduces in value like a car. In 20 years time the pool will be dirty and cracked, the home cinema system archaic and the style of the house out of fashion and it will probably be only worth the value of the land its on. In Texas I guess that is not very much. Anyone buying this house has to calculate the depreciation cost in the total cost of ownership.
