interestrateripoff
I've just recently purchased a new tablet with a 10" screen. Previously I've had a Kindle fire 7" which I found OK but the screen a little too small when reading PDFs. What I've bought also has a mini keyboard effectively turning it into a mini-laptop with a detachable screen. It's not top of the range but it's functional for what I need. Having been using it for a week the functionality of it being able to read PDF's and take notes is great. Just clip on the keyboard and type away. Yes I know it has a "screen" keyboard but I find a real keyboard much easier to use. Spec wise not top of the range the cameras don't add up to much, but then again I'm not going to be taking pictures with it so this limitation isn't an issue. The Masked Tulip
Oddly enough I specced up an ipad with keyboard for a neighbour last night. Was going to buy a laptop but wanted a tablet but missed the occasional need for a keyboard. He had no idea that you could buy tablet keyboards. Bloo Loo
Can you watch nude ladies on it? yeah, but you need your free hand to hold the tablet upright, so not only a detachable keyboard, but a extra hand would be nice...then again, with an extra hand, you wouldnt need the nude lady I suppose??? StainlessSteelCat
Does IRRO have a new sponsor? I think we should be told. Seriously though - a tablet, and possibly a keyboard, probably would cover most people's domestic needs for a computer.

Yep, if you are just emailing, surfing and typing the odd letter it would cover your needs. The only slight downside is the size of the keyboard, great for kids but not really great for lots of use with man hands. Are you giving us a heads up that you can now post Daily Mail links whilst lying in bed and sat on the bog? I could do that with the phone! gilf
I had the T100, an excellent bit of kit, only let down by the fact it had Windows 8. I really like Windows 8, think it's great especially in that configuration, i.e. touch screen and keyboard. Only problem is that the app support for Windows 8 is terrible and so in the end I got rid of it given I could only do half the things I really wanted to do with it. Windows phone is just about bearable, but the desktop doesn't cut the mustard. Funny really, gone full circle, back in the desktop glory days if you wanted any sort of compatibility and software support it needed to be Windows, I gave the Mac a go for about a year, 8-9 years ago and while good, suffered the same issue, I could do about half the things I really needed to do. Now in the mobile and tablet sphere it's Apple/Android that leads the way on the app support front.

19 year mortgage 8itch
Since I last posted my iPad has gone batshit crazy. The screen is not working and it is playing the music on it at full blast. Luckily it's not gangster rap but where do you put a ******ing noisy thing in a small house so everyone can sleep? It's going in the oven with the added bonus of it being the best place to survive the batteries self combusting. Seeing that it can run for a good 8 hours with the screen on, I've a feeling it might take days for the battery to die. Kids eh?

Steppenpig
I get a 7" Asus memopad recently (bottom of the range) I wasn't really interested, but I just thought I better try and keep up with the latest technological developments and see what everyone is on about. I thought it might be handy for when I'm travelling too. I haven't fully decided what it's good for, but it's ok for watching vids. I'd quite like to set it up for downloading podcasts, but I'm a bit nervous about signing up to things and entering personal data, so I haven't got round to it so far. On screen keyboard is a total faff, would definitely be interested in a proper keyboard. It's supposed to connect to my laptop by usb or bluetooth, but haven't worked out how yet. copydude
Interesting discussion - especially about proper keyboards. I am coming from a different direction . . . I already have a little 10 inch netbook and wasn't really in the market for a tablet . . . I thought. But I hate dinking around on mobiles . . . data entry is stupid and so are half the apps like maps on a tiny screen . . . a paper map wins every time. I got a 7 inch Asus fonepad (Android) and honestly haven't used the mobile since. And I probably use it instead of the netbook about 50% of the time. Things I like: Good battery life/energy saving. Type zoom works well. Keypad a zillion times easier than any mobile phone - though stylus recommended Notepad lets you write normally . . . that's really quick Not so good: Screen in outdoor sunlight One addition I got was a tiny bluetooth speaker/mike. You can get these for less than 20 quid and make watching TV or handsfree calls a much better experience. 7 inch is quite OK for tablet use . . . for any serious writing and editing I will always use the netbook or PC . . . though it connects very easily to wireless mice and keyboards. If you do a lot of word processing, even netbook keyboards and trackpads are not brilliant. For the price and what it does, it's hard to fault. I came across this article which I don't necessarily agree with . . . the iPhone is now in the dustbin. Apple looks to rev up fading tablet growth http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/10/15/tech-tablets-idUSL2N0S901F20141015 Tablet sales are set to rise only 11 percent this year, according to new forecasts by tech research firm Gartner, compared to 55 percent growth last year, even as smartphone sales continue to soar and PC sales trickle back. More than 50 percent of households in the United States, for example, already have one or more tablets, and are waiting longer to replace them. "Going beyond 50 percent will take a while," said Mikako Kitagawa, an analyst at Gartner. According to Kitagawa, most people in future will have a smartphone. Beyond that the trends are hard to predict. "You need to have a smartphone. It's a must-have device, then you think about the larger screen-size devices." Steppenpig
Interesting discussion - especially about proper keyboards. ... One addition I got was a tiny bluetooth speaker/mike. You can get these for less than 20 quid and make watching TV or handsfree calls a much better experience. Actually, the onscreen keyboard is quite clever for bashing in a few words, the real problem is editing. The address field in browsers doesn't seem to be expandable, there don't seem to be arrow keys on the keyboard, so if you mistype, its a pain to correct it. I expect I shall tend to use it for random clicking and surfing rather than going to specific sites. I have some bluetooth headphones. I can see it being pretty good as an alternative to mp3player or music system. (Incidentally, I havent had an mp3 player who's battery lasted longer than 6 months, I've given up on them) I haven't really worked out what al this app business is yet. I can open a you tube vid in the browser or in the youtubeapp, and I don't really see what the advantage is supposed tobe. presumably it is in some way optimised or is it just bloat ware? [edit] oh, the layer of grease that builds up on the screen after 5 minutes is kind of bleuurgh. The should come with a built in pen thing holder
