Turned Out Nice Again
i just acquired a £5 uke from a charity shop and i've got the bug. it's allegedly easy to learn to strum a few chords (with which you can play 100s of songs): but you can progress to this (maybe):

Nuggets Mahoney
now here's something you don't see every day: Begad! A whole new subculture is revealed. Just stick 'ukulele' in front of all your favourite guitar riffs into Youtube - Smoke on the Water, Voodoo Chile, How Soon is Now - and you can hear them all being enhanced or assaulted, in equal measure, by people playing toy guitars all over the world http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QtCfjYkNNg0
Nuggets Mahoney
Weren't you aware. As a concept. The reality is clearly vaster than I could have possibly imagined.

Turned Out Nice Again
OK. I'm sending that ukulele back tomorrow, can't get on with it. the strings are buzzy and it's too quiet. I can't seem to get that bright ukulele sound i was expecting. of course it could all be pilot error. anyway, i'm off to a proper music shop next time, a uke specialist, and try before i buy. If you really were George Formby, you'd write a risque song 'Sending Back my Ukelele'.
Rave
Can I just say that I read this thread and posted my original reply on my tablet, which displays this forum in mobile mode and hence doesn't show the thread description subtext (which I now know was "not just for cleaning windows" or somesuch) (I'm back on the tab now). My link to Formby was not ironic- the sheer speed and funkiness with which he thrashes the hell out of his Uke at the end gives me a genuine buzz. Depending on my mood it's 50/50 which way a drunken youtube ukelele rampage will turn, Formby wins as often as Shimbukuro TBH.
Rave
Also, 1.17 to 1.50 here: Soloing genius. That gives me every bit as much of a kick as anything Blackmore, Rhoads, May, Slash, Satriani etc. have managed, and I say that as a true lover of electric guitar virtuosity. cica
Love the ukulele but Yamaha make an instrument called the guitalele which I have. It is like a ukulele but with 6 strings and turned like a guitar (but 5 semitones higher). http://usa.yamaha.com/products/musical-instruments/guitars-basses/miniguitars/gl1/ Highly recommended. One can, of course, tune any ukele as per a guitar (albeit selecting the tuning of only 4 of the 6 strings of a guitar) which, I imagine, would make the ukelele easier for someone like me who (sort of) plays guitar. council dweller
Okay TONA.... I'm thinking of buying...with tuner and spare strings. Will wait for advice on exactly what to buy! I can sing a little (and dance a bit) to cover for for my strumming.

Good man! that's the spirit. being utterly ignorant, all i can offer is the benefit of my mistakes. 1st uke was a £5 Mahalo u30 from a charity shop. it's pretty nasty (strings like fishing line), but i haven't given up hope on it as a beater instrument so i've bought some decent (Aquila) strings to put on it. 2nd was that ashbury concert model bought in ignorance from a warehouse setup and which had to take back for a refund. today i visited a ukulele specialist shop in the East End of London. http://www.dukeofuke.co.uk/ actually tried a lot of intruments with the knowledgable owner, and came away with this: http://www.dukeofuke.co.uk/makala-student-tenor-ukulele-p-222.html and a packet of Aquila strings to put on it to replace the ones it comes with. it's a very plain-looking tenor model but sounds nice. and gets good reviews everywhere as a "serious" entry-level instrument. Yes, I'm looking for something around the 60 quid mark. One reason I'm looking is that my right wrist is a bit stiff after having a stroke about 3 months ago...nothing to write home about though. Also I have plenty of free time (sickness pay!) which should continue for about another another 3 months at around 7 hours a week. Strangely I noticed that in the 48 hours of having a stroke I couldn't speak but I counld sing! Strange that. I'll go into town tomorrow to check out ukeleles before buying on line (big surprise) Btw, the wife is always working (nights) , our neighbours are both deaf (85)....just the cat to worry about!
