Errol
Food Stamp Use Surges By Most In Years As Alabama Foodstamp Recipients Double In May http://www.zerohedge.com/news/food-stamp-use-surges-most-years-alabama-foodstamp-recipients-double-may But wait, there's more. Digging into the numbers reveals something pecuiliar: virtually the entire surge in monthly SNAP participation is due to one state alone: Alabama, which saw those living on foodstamps jump from 868K to 1.762MM. That's 36% of Alabama's population.
interestrateripoff
What did Alabama produce that it doesn't now? That's one huge spike. Also if there are that many on food stamps in Alabama how long before the state has to file for bankruptcy?
leicestersq
Maybe someone local has discovered a clever 'fiddle' (after all, it is a government benefit system) and it is spreading like a virus. Durch, I had come to pretty much the same conclusion. Wherever there are government benefit systems handing out money, there is fraud. Now we have the proof. It would be adminstratively impossible for a state like Alabama to process this many new claims in a month. Someone has automated a fraud here. And it will be uncovered soon I guess, because the jump in claims is way to obvious, someone will take a closer look. The best frauds are done much more stealthily than that. aa3
On the bright side 45 million people who have been left behind by the modern capitalist economy get some help providing food for their family. And it provides a larger market for the farmers of America. The Tea Party type movement highlights some good points about waste, but to actually cut off programs like this would be suicidal. Jason
On Sky there was a whole program dedicated to Coupon shopping ($1000 reduced to $10) - yes this was in the US, and yes I was very very bored.

From what I can gather from the comments, Food Stamps share a budget with agricultural subsidies - and most of those subsidies go to the very big agricultural companies. Guess which part of the budget the Tea Partiers want to cut..
interestrateripoff
They need more tax cuts for the rich - trickle down, that'll sort it. I think the rich should pay zero tax as clearly the tax cuts haven't been big enough for anything to trickle down, in fact the rich seem to be getting richer. Something is really wrong here and I conclude it's the rich paying too much tax.

Guess which part of the budget the Tea Partiers want to cut.. Its probably like foreign aid. A lot of which is buying vast amounts of food at home, then shipping it off and dumping it in some third world nation. (putting farmers there out of business). So a tea party farmer might be railing against his tax money being used for foreign aid.. until he finds out that money is paying for his crops that otherwise wouldn't be bought. Its also why reform is so unthinkable in many western nations at this point.. basically everyone is on the state payroll and wants to keep the slop coming. Its only unthinkable because they are trying to defy the natural deflationery trend of the BUST.
aa3
1 in 6. Its screwed up but as long as automation keeps taking over.. in time most people will need to be on foodstamps. Just like most people can not afford their own medical care anymore. Even in the US, 50% of health spending is now by the government. The big 4; public housing, welfare, food stamps and government healthcare.

They'd need to be prepared to spend a massive amount of money to contain the unrest and crime that would ensue. There's nothing like an empty belly for waking people out of their stupor and getting them onto the streets.
Downside
On Sky there was a whole program dedicated to Coupon shopping ($1000 reduced to $10) - yes this was in the US, and yes I was very very bored. I watched some video on the internet (possibly taken from the same program) where this lady went to a shop in America and did the same thing, she had hundreds of these coupons and pretty much got her whole shopping down to a tiny amount. Just hope your not waiting in the queue behind her. Its much more diffecult to do that sort of thing over here as they tend to limit how many vauchers can be used at once.
