The largest contribution was £23,000, and the smallest was £2,700, but all the residents have an equal share in the ownership of the whole field.

Cos that's not going to cause rows at any point... :)

I hope they have a nice secure trust set up to prevent arguments later.

A grou[p in Kingsthorpe Northampton raised 120K to buy a bit of land they wanted to save

They went to buy it at auction...only to be OUTBID BY A NORTHAMPTON COUNCILLOR

He then tried to stitch up the locals:

Sadly, the NN2 residents association were outbid at auction for the land by the river known as Kingsthorpe Meadows. The highest bid was placed by Labour councillor Iftikhar Choudary acting on behalf of an anonymous bidder.

Councillor Choudary has never discussed his plans with Sally Beardsworth or myself as local councillors, and he does not speak or act on behalf of the council. Any plans to build a mosque or any other large building there would require planning permission, and as we know, the land is largely in the floodplain and has been identified as open space in the local plan.

We will wait to see what is proposed. If Cllr Choudary has plans for community use of the land, it is disappointing that he did not discuss these with residents or the councillors for the area before the auction. We will continue to support residents in their efforts to protect the land for the local community and await with interest news of Cllr. Choudary’s plans."

I was truely shocked by this...and he's been allowed to do this.

Its pretty disgusting, but I'm afraid I'm no longer shocked by it.

Now that's shocking. I hope he doesn't get voted in ever again.

A council I used to work at built an entire new town.

Everyone though the location was a bit strange, and even more so when the council announced plans to move their offices there causing massive travel problems for their staff and moving from a central location to the far edge of the area they served.

It then later transpired that the Tory grandee landowners who made up the majority of the councillors had more than a few vested interests in the land in question. It all got swept under the carpet though even when proven that the land owner was closely related to the council leader.

Apparently he's flipped it back to the community (for a profit?)

It was the handover of 14 acres of land at Kingsthorpe Meadows sold to the NN2 Residents Association by the Choudhury family.

Although that is a liebour website, so the whole thing is probably photoshopped.

I love the header "A promise kept to the community", not "scumbag collegue gets caught out, runs off with tail between legs"
call me cynical,.. but how much would their house prices have dropped if the housing development had been built?
Presumably motivations on a 'restrict supply' ticket

That's less than Ten Grand an acre for 'building land' - someone is telling massive, misleading, propaganda, porkies in that report!

"There were fears"

The beneficiaries of the estate would have held off & sold the 13 acres for MILLIONS if it had any chance of being building/development land!
