game over Posted September 21, 2008 Posted September 21, 2008 ***** Not ONE word on who will pay the trillions of $. Not one word on the inflation that would be created, or sterling's new found role as loo roll Not one word about the goal - to keep the rich banks powerful. To keep house prices high, to stop house prices correcting to a level where ordinary people can purchase. The plan to bail will be paid for by the poor, via inflation and /or higher taxes, and will benefit the rich bankers and BTL scum. He's supposed to be a Socialist. Woops I forgot, he has a massive vested interest. Quote
dr ray Posted September 21, 2008 Posted September 21, 2008 I can't find the original post where Hutton was interviewed on Newsnight but several posters on the thread complained to the BBC about VI. Here is the reply I received. Thank you for your e-mail. We’re sorry if you were concerned by the interview with Will Hutton during the edition of ‘Newsnight’ broadcast on 8 September. There are generally fairly limited circumstances were we would feel it necessary to examine the role of an interviewee’s spouse during the programme. In this case the discussion was not about the company Mr Hutton’s wife’s is involved with. Rather it was looking at the issues of intervention in the housing market in the United States and Government policy on the economy. Mr Hutton is a well respected journalist and was there to represent a view held by many – alternative views were well represented by other guests during the programme. Thank you again for taking the time to get in touch and for the feedback which we know the programme makers appreciated. Regards BBC Complaints I would have thought his wife's financial interests were relevant to the opinions he gave but perhaps the BBC will think twice about having him on again now having received a number of complaints. Interesting the BBC consider him a journalist not an economist! Quote
wonderpup Posted September 21, 2008 Posted September 21, 2008 Hutton loves poor people- he just does'nt want to be one- which may happen unless a bailout happens quick Quote
1929crash Posted September 21, 2008 Posted September 21, 2008 We will all be poor if action is not taken. Will Hutton is legitimately worried about the possibility of depression. You know, poverty, unemployment and so on. Quote

Guest sillybear2 Posted September 21, 2008 Posted September 21, 2008 If Hutton gets his way we'll get a hyperinflationary depression, that will cripple not just us, but future generations with stupid levels of debt. Very selfish. Quote

You know, poverty, unemployment and so on. His position is not rational- house prices cannot be maintained at the current level- something is overiding his ability to accept this simple fact- in other words he is making an emotional rather than intellectual argument, which indicates to me that his motivation is deeply personal. He wants HPI, no matter what the cost. Quote

1929crash Posted September 22, 2008 Posted September 22, 2008 I wonder if posters here have read the thread started by Williamdb on Saturday. He argued that we have been experincing a deflation since March of this year. Given the serious nature of deflation Hutton is right to argue for counter-action. He is not arguing for HPI. Quote

We'll all be poor if action IS taken and for a lot longer than if the market is allowed to correct itself. Depressions are caused by meddling. Quote

That's a very good comparison. A depression must be avoided at all costs. We've gone beyond saving house prices now. All these bailouts are designed just to keep the system from collapsing. Quote
loon Posted September 22, 2008 Posted September 22, 2008 I think some people on here view depression the same way as neocons in Washington view WW3 - a jolly bit of fun I do not - absolutely not. I do wonder though, what we should do about it. My current view is that these bail-outs will delay the inevitable and prolong the agony. I am prepared to be convinced otherwise, and this is why I have a problem with Will Hutton. He appears on Newsnight with the tag "The Work Foundation", and has widely pontificated his views in books and articles. He's passionate, and argues well. It sounds good. Then I find out from HPC.co.uk that he stands to benefit in no small way from some of the very actions he advocates! This whole thing smells. And I'm annoyed that Newsnight did not even broach the conflict of interest angle. Quote
