Malthus
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-11582839 Chancellor George Osborne has confirmed that the government will provide £25m in cash and a £175m loan to the Presbyterian Mutual Society (PMS). When is a bail out not a bail out ? When it's a loan

PJ1977
You've got to think it will be very tough for the Kennedy's remaining businesses - trade credit terms will have tightened up to the point where you could imagine other businesses will be asking for cash on delivery. And the attitude of the their JV partners, the Jennings brothers, will be important.

talksalot81
where will all the grads go? Same place as the last year - the benefits office If this does not appeal, they will probably take their expertise elsewhere. If that does not appeal they will probably do a PGCE and next year.... they will take their expertise elsewhere! And after they finish that they find out there's such a oversupply of teachers out there they head back to the dole office or take on another course

Malthus
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-11671865 The Department of Health in NI employs 920 staff in agencies or arms length bodies on wages of over £100,000. ratatat
I cannot understand why pay cuts for civil servants is not top of the political agenda It is an obvious solution to some of the problems, and because of they they will do something random that will make things worse instead. It's a shame you need to be in a tribe here to get elected, maybe I could get in as a local councilor though, recent polite questioning emails to mine have only had one of them responding, bloody jokers (minus the one). talksalot81
I cannot understand why pay cuts for civil servants is not top of the political agenda I agree but head over to the NI forum on MSE. The views there will show you why this will not happen. Too many of the people are entrenched in the view that cuts are not right and run to the unions blah blah blah. They wont accept cuts in staffing levels. They wouldnt accept pay cuts. It just doesn't fit. There is not enough money so it has to be saved somehow... and I never hear realistic answers from the public sector supporters...

Imho the main problem is that civil servants really think they are underpaid and that if they were less public spirited they would just move to the private sector for a pay rise. Time for a large dose of reality.

As I've said a few times, they will cut back on public services and have even more people sitting idle rather than cut salaries/jobs. They really do think they are more important than the services they are employed to provide.
Malthus
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-11675562 Allied Irish Bank put its UK operations up for sale in March. First Trust is the bank's Northern Ireland business. In a statement, AIB said that "in light of current market conditions, progress in relation to the disposal of that business has been challenging". If you put an asset on the market and get no offers it is technically worthless, a good lesson for some deluded homeowners in Northern Ireland
