Deputy Labour Leadership Runner, Peter Hain, has lashed out at second homes and executive pay...

http://money.guardian.co.uk/news_/story/0,,1990147,00.html

"He blamed a 'rat-run' of 'City types' snapping up Scottish shooting estates and second homes for soaring house prices that have squeezed out first-time buyers. Hain is understood to be studying ways of bringing in legislation to limit the size of the gap between the pay of a company's most senior and most junior staff to help reduce social inequality. Companies could still give top performers big rises, but doing so would be expensive because they would have to lift pay at the bottom too."

Since when did first time buyers decide to buy a Scottish shooting estate as their first foray into the housing market? FTB and people buying castles in Scotland are not in the same market except via a very long chain of housing transactions and even then the number of country estates sold in a year is far less than the number of two bed flats!

It is not City types but ordinary people borrowing large multiples of income and using their existing equity to do BTL that is driving out FTB. Of course a potential deputy leader could not be seen to be criticising the future leader for his economic policies so we just slip back into 'Old Labour' politics of envy mode and criticise the City. Problem is that Gordon Brown actually has praised the City for its innovation and wealth generation.

++++WARNING: THE FOLLOWING POST IS NOT RECOMMENDED FOR THOSE WITH A HISTORY OF BLOOD PRESSURE AND/OR HEART PROBLEMS++++

At least the "City types" are buying these extra properties with their own money.

Up here in Scotland, the taxpayer foots the bill when the politicians dabble in the property market:

http://politics.guardian.co.uk/scotland/st...1957465,00.html

"Calls to scrap the accommodation allowance for MSPs were stepped up last night after it emerged that members of the Scottish Parliament were buying and selling taxpayer-funded properties to each other and keeping the profits.

The Observer has learned that Andrew Wilson, the former Nationalist MSP, made nearly £40,000 when he sold his Edinburgh flat to Nationalist MSP Rob Gibson and his partner, the Green MSP Eleanor Scott, after losing his seat in the 2003 elections. All three have billed the public for mortgage interest payments on the same property.......

"At least 48 MSPs have profited from the mortgage interest scheme, which has cost the taxpayer about £2m since 1999. The main complaint about the perk is that it allows MSPs to buy properties with public cash and then keep the profits when a flat is sold.

Also controversial is the practice of renting from relatives. Labour MSP John Home Robertson has been billing the public £600 a month to stay in his son's flat while Transport Minister Tavish Scott admitted billing the taxpayer to stay at his sister's flat.

Scott used taxpayer's money to help buy a £100,000 flat, made a £36,000 profit, and then used that to help buy a £300,000 family home. He now bills the taxpayer £1,000 a month for that...."]

How ironic for Mr Hain to be making these comments, when his own party has made scathing attacks on people from other parties in the celtic nations who have made the very same type of comments.

For example: When some Nationalists in Wales used to highlight the housing issues in rural Wales, particularly in rural Welsh-speaking Wales, of wealthy (English) migrants buying second homes in rural Welsh communities, pushing up the prices and pricing locals out of their local housing market... New Labour used to describe those who highlighted such issues as being racist.

Hain is yet another Welsh Windbag, with a Communist past.

If Hain has anything sensible to say it should be written on paper, preferably titled "Resignation".

He grew up in South Africa though. I always think of Joss Ackland in Lethal Weapon 2 when I hear him. What could be better, fat jock Gordon as PM and Pik Botha as his deputy ?

So Hain is gunning for the job of Deputy PM to Gordon Brown, and he makes this statement claiming that he would like to limit the gap between rich and poor. In my opinion a worthy aim as large gaps cause more trouble than they are worth (and nobody really deserves to be obscenely wealthy).

Who is he trying to appeal to here? Not the electorate I am sure, because the Deputy PM role is pretty meaningless to us and is more of a reward for lapdoggery than anything.

He is trying to appeal to Brown and his clan, who will be the dominant force in Westminster soon enough. So we can conclude that Brown approves of this sort of thing. Brown has already mentioned that his premiership will be marked by austerity, which fits well with his grim countenance and lack of charm.

I suspect Brown may turn out to be more old labour than many think. He has played the game with Tony and his cronies but now it is his turn and he will be putting his own "son of the manse" stamp on the UK soon enough. This will amount to redistributive practices, taking from the rich to give to the poor. His puritanical streak will not sit comfortably with excessive City Bonuses and fat cat pay awards, and I expect he will seek to clamp down on this behaviour.

Another thought on this - MPs were until quite recently fairly well paid with respect to the cost of living in the UK. On their salaries and allowances they were part of the wealthy elite of UK society.

Now they can barely afford a London studio flat on their wages, all thanks to the rise of the super rich elite who are pricing them out of their former exclusive lifestyles.

Have they all cottoned on to the fact that a huge gap between rich and poor is bad for them as well? Will they now seek to reclaim their territory by knocking the elite down a peg or two? They have been pushing for mega pay rises, but this looks difficult to justify when so many people are getting poorer.

Oh at last. I think I have fallen in love with the man. Labour could win me back from UKIP afterall.

Having reduced working class pay to 40% less in real terms in little over 4 years, using immigration as the catalyst.

It would come as no suprise that they now turn their attention on the overpaid, not for social justice, but so they the public servants can award themselves some more of hard working British Families money.

And should we be suprised, well of course not, they are the socialist evil people had only read about in books on the fiction shelves of Waterstones.

Is this the chap that offered our MP (Peter Law) a peerage not to go independant?

Peter Hain, fled with his family from South Africa.

The family were associated with ARM (Armed Resistance Movement) and involved in what would be considered today terrorist activities.

Upon coming to England Peter Hain faced charges of conspiricy, he was later put on trial for a Bank Robbery, he had a good Barrister and was aquitted of the charges.

Peter Hain was a strong supporter of Robert Mugabe.

He is a leading fan of Joint Sovereignty handing over Gibralter to the Spanish.

I suppose on all the above points he fits in well with the profile of New Labour.
