Loss of life for something like this is a terrible thing, likewise all the stress and suffering caused, which for many has lasted for nearly four years. However, generally there is not a lot of societal sympathy for people who evade taxes. Anyone who uses a scheme like this going forward is a muppet. The line has been clearly drawn in the sand by HMRC and a small amount of research would show this. I have a lot of sympathy for people who entered into these schemes pre-2016, many of them were just a bit naive and were too trustworthy of the scheme providers sales spiel. ''However, generally there is not a lot of societal sympathy for people who evade taxes. '' On the surface, no, but in reality, everyone who idolises pop stars, football players, all other so called celebs is happy to pay more tax so that their hero's can avoid/evade tax offshore somewhere warm. Same for all the Murdoch press readers, Daily Mail, Express readers etc who champion the mega rich and big corps at their own very real expense, ie they are willing to sacrifice their own income and pay more tax themselves, also suffer the fallout of less government revenue to the point of having a run down NHS and dozens of other services and infrastructure that is keeping the UK in a perma state of second class, All to let the scum of society live tax free and often law free.. The landlords currently evading tax have seen themselves in the same club as the landed gentry and the city bankers. They are not, they are considered by the inner circle to be upstarts and need to be put back where they belong. Which is probably the only thing I will be in agreement with that class of parasite. The perversity of this state still astounds me. The Press have effectively convinced Turkeys it's better to be farmed, pumped full of drugs, and slaughtered because it's better than the alternative If a crash is allowed to happen, there will be a subset of people, self educated - capable of clear analysis - that will become the new middle class. They will have the political power and, in time, they will wonder at how people could be so stupid. In the past there was a clear societal distinction between the Nobility & Landed Gentry versus the 'new money' Gentry. The Gentry tried to buy into the Landed lifestyle, and burned spectacularly. History likes repeating itself.
