stormymonday_2011
Hard to no where to begin with wind instruments though you might finds it easiest to start with a kazoo Anyway Jack Teagarden and his orchestra demonstrate a few choices in this clip. Some nice drumming by Ray Bauduc and piano from Marvin Ash too too.
stormymonday_2011
Anf or someone who is not reknowned as a full time saxophone player Van Morrison does a pretty good job of displaying the capabilities of the instrument here. MrPin
Trombones, bassoons, kazoos, drums, Wurlitzer, Theremin? The choice is endless. I'm not getting a Stylophone. . Shame on Joe, who has a saxophone, but didn't try it. Stop playing with computers! That's your job! Big up to XYY for his trombonium skills. Bet Mrs XYY likes that, I avoided learning musical instruments at school, as I wanted to be scientist. But later on I noticed that Albert Einstein played the violin, and Richard Feynman did bongos. Also Brian May likes looking up telescopes.

MrPin
I have a couple but I have NO patience for learning anything that I don't get quickly. I am as musical as a brick. You can make a xylophone with carefully cut roof tiles, but bricks don't have a good tone.

winkie
I can play three blind mice on a recorder......my dad could listen to any song and play it back on a piano or accordion, never had a music lesson in his life.....picked up a guitar and started playing..... oracle
have you thought about bagpipes? it's one of those instruments, that your neighbours will absolutely hate you for, while you are an apprentice in need of practice. same for violins. drums is sort of good for a laugh though...but nothing beats the scratchy-fingers-on-chalkboard sensation of a learner violinist/bagpiper. Rave
The thing about saxophones is they're fantastically loud. My little bro used to play a bit, was in the jazz band at school. Practice was a problem for the rest of the household. Someone down the road from me is a pretty decent player and I sometimes hear them practising when I go out for a fag prior to going to bed when I'm on early shifts. I've even walked down the street to see what house it's coming from, but always got to the end of my fag before I've got there!
Mrs Bear
Now that I have a bit of a tax rebate, I might try a saxophone. Does any one here know about them? A beginner with a guitar would be delighted with a £200 one nowadays, but I already know something of guitars. Saxophones are a mystery, and start at about £200. Like guitars you could spend a lot on one. There will be plenty of people who know all about saxophones and playing them on the ABRSM* website forum. They are quite kind to all complete beginners, too. :-). Only you'd have to register to ask any questions. *Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music. Actually I like bassoons, but they might break my tight budget! Also, they are not as cool. Although they all come apart like an assualt rifle. Many founts of wisdom on that forum - though not of course as many or as wise as in the Land of Pin.

eek
Just make sure you stick to an alto sax. Eldest twin has been given a baritone saxophone by the school's music service as they need one in their bands. When I eventually have to buy one its going to set me back somewhere between £2000 and £3000 depending on the discount they can give...

Yes posh instruments can be expensive! If I add all my guitars up it won't buy half of an Alpine bassoosaphonium.

That seems like rather a lot of investment as I would think the percentage of adults who ever pick up the instrument, they played at school, ever again must be vanishingly small. The youngest twin has a £1400 flute. That started as a £500 ebay purchase and then an insurance claim so I probably need to buy the baritone (if I can get it cheap enough to show I'm being fair to each of them). And its not really that much when I charge what I do to fix the computer software I specialise in, There is also a lot of comedy value in the saxophone. Its 4ft tall and the older twin is at most 5ft tall and unlikely to grow any taller.

It's just a bit of plumbing with a hole in one side.
eek
Wish it was gold, the flute is a fancy plastic called grenaditte. It sounds like a wooden flute without the price and she only wanted it as it was black. As for being musical, it's nothing to do with me I can't play a thing. I expect the "things" are there as a mute, like on a trumpet. Actually I have a Swiss friend and he has one of those! It doesn't fit on the plane, an he does not like cuckoo clocks.
