  1. are you saying the 8 million JAMs doesn't include professionals?
  2. anybody... 30% of the population, 19 million people, are now below the "minimum income standard" The number below MIS has risen by 4 million since 2008/9, or a 5 percentage point rise 11 million people have incomes below 75% of MIS and are at high risk of poverty 8 million people are just about managing to get by
  3. ok well lets look at full time nurses According to a press release the RCN Foundation awarded over 500 financial hardship grants to working, retired, trainee, or unemployed nurses, midwives and healthcare assistants in the UK in 2016. The Foundation says that one in four grants went to a full-time nurse.
  4. just so you know the Tories are getting rid of the student nurse 5k bursary. It was in the November budget. In September 2017, NHS bursaries paid to students will be cut and replaced with loans. this is likely to put off students becoming nurses it's a way of sneakily undermining the NHS a vote for the Tories = a weaker NHS
  5. How much do you think the shops are worth below it?
  6. Trainee nurses don't get the living wage. also anyone can become disabled, you might have a stroke tomorrow. you wont be able to drive. you won't be able to work. you'll need carers to help you adjust until you can reprogram your brain with therapy. your home will need adjusting. all of this will take weeks before the government gets around to giving you any help you'll need disability payments which will take weeks to come through. You'll need to be assessed first and that will take time. if you haven't got any money saved, you may need to go to a food bank. hopefully you can survive on the disability payments.
  7. 1 million people on food banks is just wrong. no system is perfect, you might get a few none claimants abusing the system but so what? I'd rather have a few abusers and the people getting the help they need. there is a lot worse things in the world.
  8. May's gone into full submarine mode BBC4 woman's hour tomorrow:
  9. I suppose sitting at home on your computer it's easy to say you've surveyed more than a million food bank users. "Many people arriving at food banks have experienced a number of personal shocks in succession – bereavement, the loss of a job, illness – but between half and two-thirds of users end up at food banks because of problems with benefits. This includes delayed payments, changes to benefits such as the reduction in Disability Living Allowance and financial penalties known as sanctions. " "Sam and Joe (their names have been changed at their request, as have others in this article) have been together for just over two years. They met at work, at a supermarket in Hertfordshire. It’s just as well they have each other, they told me, because they don’t have much else. Most days they eat once. They wait until as late as they can possibly manage, then they have a meal of rice or potatoes or (“if we can afford it”) bread – “anything filling”, Sam said. I met them on their second visit to Tower Hamlets Foodbank, in a church surrounded by council blocks. This east London borough has the highest rate of child poverty in the city; the average income is £11,400. I arrived ten minutes before the food bank opened and already a queue had formed outside the door. Not long after the couple met, Joe, who is 27, left his job to move in with his grandmother and care for her while she was dying of cancer. Then Sam’s mental health grew worse and she found she could no longer work. She thinks she is suffering from post-traumatic stress syndrome – she was abused as a child and left home at 15, and before she met Joe she had been in a string of violent relationships – but she has been waiting for months to see a psychiatrist. When Joe’s grandmother died, they were not allowed to keep on her tenancy. They thought they would end up homeless, but just in time they found somewhere to stay. The problem was that for two months their housing benefit didn’t come through. “We’re just sort of stuck at the moment,” Sam said." http://www.newstatesman.com/politics/2015/03/why-are-so-many-people-using-food-banks
  10. Maybe if the supreme leader May had actually turned up for the debate the Tories in the audience might have clapped for her. But if she doesn't turn up why would they clap?
  11. I think all this 'no informal talks before article 50' and 'you must complete a 2 year exit before you can talk about trade terms' is all huffing and puffing from the europeans. if things turn nasty, Britain will call on it's friends in the USA and the common wealth to lean on the EU, straight after brexit Obama came out and said that the 'special relationship endures' which I take to mean...'give us a call if you need some help'. it's in everyone's interest that the UK has a smooth, quick and orderly exit we don't want any ridiculous EU rule book to get in the way. The only reason that the EU would try to punish us is to stop other countries from leaving which would just show how insecure the EU is, if it's that good, why are they so scared? When the UK leaves the EU the UK will look out to the rest of the world, the USA, the Common Wealth Nations, China, South America and Africa. the EU will be dominated by Germany with Russia trying to push in from the east, haven't we seen this before? The UK is the 5th largest economy in the world, part of the G7 and a permanent member of the UN security council, the USA needs a strong partner and will probably frown on any EU attempts to knock us down a peg or two. going back to trade tariffs.... the average tariffs for importing goods into the EU is around 1% http://data.worldbank.org/indicator/TM.TAX.MRCH.WM.AR.ZS GBP has already dropped around 10% so even with the tariffs we're still 9% cheaper than before. and bless New Zealand for offering their trade negotiators to us.. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/business/2016/06/29/new-zealand-offers-uk-its-top-trade-negotiators-for-post-brexit/ the UK has friends in the world!
  12. Quote here: Cecilia Malmstrom, EU Trade Commissioner. "I do not take my mandate from the European People". http://www.independent.co.uk/voices/i-didn-t-think-ttip-could-get-any-scarier-but-then-i-spoke-to-the-eu-official-in-charge-of-it-a6690591.html
