  1. I was going to start a separate thread on the topic of porn. In pre-internet days top shelf porn mags apparently bucked recessionary trends. I am guessing that pornography, like confectionery, is an impulse buy. I expect that with the forthcoming credit card crunch many online porn sites, which rely on subscriptions, will go bust, hence the plethora of 'loss-leader' free stuff enticing the punters to subscribe will also go down. The consequence is that ye olde top shelf w*nk mags could make a comeback.
  2. As there are fewer cycle retailers than there used to be, I expect Halfords to survive, rather than selling leisure ('mountain') bicycles, by selling town bikes.
  3. Which is where Allsopp is wrong on all counts. Plenty of us don't 'hate' her, we simply don't care for her or any of her ilk. We are not all renters, many of us are owners seeking to trade up at sensible (ie pre-bubble) levels We mostly have an interest in protecting our savings and we are trying to prevent other people suffering due to losing their savings through inflation, devaluation, bailouts or being suckered into the Ponzi pyramid schemes that she promotes. HPC is defending the interests of the genuinely financially prudent against the profligate borrow-and-spenders who have both bankrupted Britain and encouraged many individuals to bankrupt themselves. I'd happily engage in a financial discussion with her and destroy all her arguments.
  4. Surely the real issue is when do investors start to short the Euro. It's just another fiat currency, why should it be immune from speculation?
  5. He must be a masochist. I can just imagine him bending over for Jackboot Jacqui to give him a good spanking!
  6. Just having a browse through the Howkins Harrison site and the prices are no lower than 2005/06 levels. Way too high for auction starting prices IMO.
  7. Why not just sell San Francisco to the Chinese? It was Chinese labour that built the place after all, just like Vancouver if the Canadians need to sell that to make a few bucks.
  8. Quite a few. The factory is in Castle Bromwich, which is officially part of Solihull, and the Birmingham conurbation is deemed to be a crucial 'battleground' area. Meriden, also officially part of Solihull, has a Tory MP (Caroline Spellman) and Coventry where Jaguar still has its research department, though no longer any manufacturing, has three Labour seats, all of which are fairly safe. We used to have four parliamentary seats, three Lab, one Con, though the Tories gerrymandered themselves out of that seat, Cov SW, by abolishing it in 1997.
  9. So they won't be able to drop all that money to fight the deflationary demon that stalks the mass media.
  10. I still have a copy of the local property rag from 1 August 2001. If I were putting in an offer I would say that I would pay a price at that level and no more. I would then engage in a discussion with the EA as to why they believe prices can remain higher than that, because there is no rational reason why then can IMO.
  11. This thread appears to have lost the plot since the OP - any at rate, my understanding of the legislation is that the hourly working week can be averaged out over the year, as it needs to be for employment which is seasonably variable. Can anyone clarify this please?
  12. The British government has always had to ask the US government for permission to use the Trident 'independent deterrent' which our taxes pay for. Many RAF bases, eg Mildenhall, are just US airbases now with a few token Limeys up front. I suspect that the Atomic Weapons Research Establishment at Aldermarston has been diversifying away from its core activity, just like the Atomic Energy Research Establishment just up the road at Harwell has been. So flogging off either of these to make a few bob is no surprise.

    Flyboarding

I saw a Connells 'SOLD' board this morning outside a house close to where I live and which I walk past every day. There was no 'FOR SALE' board there beforehand. Back in the mid-90s Connells was prosecuted for paying people to put 'SOLD' boards up in order to try and generate a market. I wonder if they are at it again?
  14. I think that the cigarette companies should adopt this for all those who miss having their clothes reeking of fag smoke when they come home from the pub. Just think: B&H Body Spray or JPS Noir pour Homme.
  15. Every time I come across an article in the mainstream media about how 'dire' Germany's economy is or how the Eurozone is going to shrink / break, it is invariably written by the same person, to the point where I don't see the point in reading any of those articles anymore because they are all so predictable.
  16. Empathy for the staff but the bottom line is that MFI has lost its way and been usurped by Ikea, just as Woolies has by Wilkos. It's called competition.
  17. I wonder how much he owes on his cab as they cost a cool £30k each brand new? http://www.lti.co.uk/
  18. Agreed on both points which is why I am basing Y2K prices as the stable values, following the over-correction (which itself should be 1995 values, ie 2.5 times average salary, inflation adjusted). As a mortgage-free home-owner, that is what I am supposing will be the appropriate price to trade up at, hopefully without needing a mortgage to do so, assuming that my savings retain some real value! The sooner prices fall back to Y2K levels across the board the better IMO.
  19. Just don't log on again. Why be so bothered about deleting your profile?
  20. Hey, a thread about house prices for once. I'm tired of all the government / media /speculative crap about 'deflation', when food, gas and electricity prices have soared over the past year, our currency is still falling and there has been little correction in the price of housing down to sensible income-related levels. I believe that house prices should stabilise at 2000/01 levels, allowing for an overcorrection beforehand, however as ZanuLabour wishes to inflate away the debt, is this likely to happen?
  21. The 'joined up' thinking is that ZanuLabour can retain some of its marginal seats in the West Midlands.
  22. Sad that so many people have to have their low-cocoa high-dairy crap.
  23. What is the likely cost to councils of having to house those who have defaulted on their mortgages and hence had their properties repossessed?
