  1. You must have been there at the same time as him! He mainly left campus to purchase cheap spirits, clothes, music, and the occasional birthday present. Lidl will survive come what may, music moved online years ago, but I reckon the local clothes and mobile phone shops will notice it. Anyway, it was Pontypridd that got my vote, and the bride's father voted for Aberysthwyth.
  2. This very subject came up at a family wedding at the weekend, but not with respect to BTL. We reckoned there were several places in the UK where the local population is quite small in comparison to the number of students living in the area. Used to a huge influx of money the town centres are going to be decimated. The only ones we could think of off the top of our heads were Aberysthwyth, Loughborough and Pontypridd (University of Glamorgan), but we reckoned there must be several more.
  3. Is he a bit too careful? My brother got turned down on his first mortgage application in 2001 because he'd never had a credit card or a loan, and therefore no proven track record of paying back borrowed money. He was putting down a 20% deposit..
  4. My Nat West debit cards used to be Maestro/Switch. When they expired last year they were replaced with 'Visa Debit'.
  5. RIP Britannia BS No, we're getting the boot in by making overpayments.
  6. Really? Last year it cost us £120 a night for all four of us to sleep in a cramped grotty attic room in a Bournemouth B&B (lovely breakfast mind). Just days before we had stopped in a 4-star hotel near Reading, with huge immaculate interlinking rooms, gym, swimming pool...entry to Legoland included... only £30 a night more
  7. The big carpet companies will always give you a good square metre price, and then load up the underlay/gripper/fitting charges. We use a local independent and his full fitted cost comes in a lot lower than the big names, for exactly the same carpet. Our lounge/dining room/stair carpet quote (it's all open plan) is coming in at just under £2K for 'will last 20-30 years' stuff. Based on previous quotes the big names would be after £2500-3000.
  8. Car was 12 months too new... boiler had been changed 12 months before... ground floor/stair carpet is threadbare... bring it on!
  9. They used to use 'demand' as the excuse for high prices during school holidays, what is the excuse now? £3K for a family of four for ten nights of self-catering in Portugal is extracting urine. We might be able to afford it, but we certainly won't be paying it.
  10. It wasn't out of a bottle last night when they were being 'thrifty'.
  11. Which means you then need to do something with the rest of the lemon... Gin anyone? As for the knicker dyeing... why not just keep on wearing them regardless instead of wasting money on dye? In fact, my knickers contain so little fabric that I think it's cheaper to buy a 3-pack of new ones from Tesco than it is to buy dye! Merryn's analysis of the discarded ATM receipts... Why does she assume that everyone has the same payday? That person with £4K in their current account could have just been paid. They could also just had the funds transferred from a loan
  12. We too would face increased rates as we are BoE +0.5%, but we checked what the repayments would be at 12%, and even that wouldn't put us at risk of serious problems.
  13. We looked around a place like that. Whoever was actually selling the house hadn't bothered to clear anything from it, it was like the Marie Celeste. Washed up mugs on the drainer, dry washing still on the airer, bank statements and phone bills left out on the table... The agent was obviously frustrated by both the asking price and the clutter, as he asked our opinion on both. We pointed out we'd seen enough stuff to be able to commit identity theft, and the state of the place indicated we were likely to get stiffed with getting it cleared. We got a phone call a couple of weeks later to say the price had dropped, and the house had been 'decluttered'. The people who bought it still ended up giving loads of stuff away and filling several skips. Mind you they didn't pay even the revised asking price
  14. +1 Though my mother, who is younger than him, is only a pre-boomer by a matter of weeks. It's her that's got a horrendous sense of entitlement. Dad at least recognises that Gen Y and below are being screwed.
  15. 5%=26. The school currently employs 520 staff?! I find that hard to believe.
  16. Why? Not everyone who bought post '97 is on a 7 x two salary 125% LTV IO liar loan.
  17. You should watch Wall-E sometime. It might be a cute cartoon for kids, but for the adult viewer it's a scary vision of our Tesco future.
