  1. There are a few outlier cases of students with a low 2:2 getting on the 4 year medicine course - they aced the exams and interview.
  2. This is currently front page headline news on the BBC website : Home - BBC News
  3. Nice, hope it's genuine, but If there's a museum nearby you might want to check that they don't sell reproduction coins like that in the souvenir shop. I'm not an expert but it doesn't look very worn from being 850-odd years old
  4. Those things could cause damp under certain conditions. What I wrote in my previous post was they are not the cause of the sort of damp problems presented in the BBC article and panorama episode.
  5. Leaky roofs, poor insulation, defective plaster (hygroscopic salts) no or cheap ineffective extraction fans and draughts are causing these problems. Wet clothes on radiators, not opening windows and not using the heating enough isn't
  6. Hmmm interesting that Manchester's is up? How reliable is your source? We are circa 30% down compared to this time last year, and last year was substantially down on the year before. Agree about the shake down
  7. Can't tell how big the problem is from that photo. Do you know if there are cracks inside or outside the property? If so, how wide are they? Where do they run? Do they cut through bricks or run around them?
  8. Newcastle University, a Russell Group University, is planning on cutting 300 jobs in 2 years by voluntary redundancy initially. They've already had a recent voluntary redundancy scheme so looks like compulsory redundancies will be coming there before long. Newcastle University announces £30m further cuts as threat of industrial action looms
  9. A few more shops and pubs have closed since xmas in my West Yorkshire town - there's only going to be be B&M and Wetherspoons left soon.
  10. My university is taking a much keener interest in university league tables. Analysing the data is problematic; it's not straightforward to get the data from the web pages, especially older data and the methodology is not clear and can change. The hope is we can identify what areas to improve on to jump up a few places and bag a few more international students. The hope is if we
  11. There are early signs 2025 is shaping up to be worse than 2024 in terms of international student recruitment.
  12. Agree that if you have a very small kitchen then open plan is the way to go. The cavity in older houses tends to be smaller so you would probably get less benefit from cavity wall insulation than a more modern house.
  13. I was watching the latest episode of a Krusty show last night (Love it or List it Season 100 Episode 1) and she told the homeowning couple to reinstate the wall between their kitchen and dining room to save on their heating bill. This from the woman who has been telling people time and time again for 20+ years that knocking down a wall will add £££ to the value of their home. Made me think of this old thread. Kirstie and Phil's Love It or List It - Series 8: Episode 8 | Channel 4
  14. 'The chance to meet stimulating, interesting people all the time' So people outside of London are generally less interesting? 'If you go out for a drink, less chance of bumping into the local character wanting fisticuffs' If you go out drinking outside of London you're more likely to get into a fight with a local? There's a connection there - Maybe your attitude makes you a target?
  15. Pay has ballooned for senior academic and non-academic at the top - everyone else has had negligible pay rises for at least 15 years. It's the same as with a lot of other industries. International students from all countries have dropped and they are not likely to come back for a while at least, if ever.
