The Protests At The Boe Yesterday

There has been a lot of selective reporting of yesterdays events. So here is my view. I was so angry with the way this whole financial situation has been handled, I travelled 100 miles to voice my disgust.

I joined the portest from London Bridge to BOE. It was a real mixture of protesters, yes there were anarchists, that was predictable, but there were alot of ordinary middle aged and pensioners, who like me just wanted to make a stand. I spoke to one 80yr old lady who was furious, and made the comment how Blair/Bush must be laughing their socks off for getting out just in time.

After the protests had arrived at the BOE, the police blocked all the streets to contain them. After 2 hours, I had made my protest and was ready to leave. The press and media were allowed to come in and out of the cordon. I asked a policeman how long we were going to be held for, he could not (did not want to) tell me. I asked him why the press could come and go, but innocent protesters like me were not allowed this freedom. He told me that it was his "orders" I asked who from, the "Porn Queen"? - no reply. I pointed out that their actions were just inflaming the anarchists and there were peacefull protesters who needed toilets. Got a shrug of the shoulders.

At the BOE protesters had written slogans in chalk, and one protester scaled the columns and hung 2 anti capitalist banners. No permanent damage done.

The storming of RBS. I am not surprised, RBS staff were stood in the windows goading the anarchists on, waving wads of cash and making gestures. That's not an excuse, it's an explanation.

As for me, I carried my placard criticising Brown/Darling, I shouted at the RBS staff to get back to work to earn money to pay off "OUR" loan. I also shouted at the BOE asking Merv to come out and face the music. Did it do any good? probably not, but I just had to make a stand.

This was clearly designed to inflame anger and discourage anyone from protesting in the future. So, did you have your photo taken when you left? Was the tube at 'Bank' in service (hence leave that way)?

I can second what the above poster said - although I didn't see the RBS stuff.

I managed to escape the kettling so now I know what to do in furture protests, you have to make sure the police can't trap you. I was there from 10.30 AM to 10.30 PM. Bit of protesting, break down the pub, bit more protesting, pint down the pub.

We really do live in a police state. You think you are free until you test those freedoms.

People should be aware that in this country we really are not very free at all. I joined liberty as a result of going to the protests.

The upshot of the ruling and the police's application of their "kettle" formula is that people thinking about embarking on demonstrations in the future may have to decide whether they want to be effectively locked up for eight hours without food or water and, when leaving, to be photographed and identified

This is definitely going to put people off. Only those with nothing to lose will dare protest.

I didn't see the RBS staff waving money but listening to City boys in the pub afterwards I'm not surprised. (Some) obviously though the protests were only by unwashed students with no legitimate complaint.

I was at work in the City of London making money for me and my bank so that I could pay loads and loads of tax (minus the avoidance scheme) to pay for the police operation and the cleanup operation. How can you condone smashing up the windows and looting a government office? Why can't the protestors take their litter home? Do the protestors have a clue about financial markets, derivatives etc? No.

I would love to see some photos of that happening. Surely someone must have taken some.

Let's see what truns up on yuotube etc over the next few days/weeks then.

We're you the one who was trying to set fire to RBS's blinds with a fag lighter?

Almost exactly describes my day!

Except my "Liberty" moment was getting a flier for http://www.simondixon.org/about/

I might well join Liberty too though. Ironically I was first moved to think about joining Liberty recently after reading about Jackie Smith's plans for email surveillance on the "Fascist" Guido Fawkes' website!

Do the protestors have a clue about financial markets, derivatives etc? No.

This has GOT to be the funniest post I've read on HPC in a long time!

If you City numpties had the first idea about derivatives we wouldn't be in this shitpile in the fisrt place, would we?

If they DID they would be REALLY angry at how much (some) people like you have fu*ked things up under the cover of being "essential" to society.

Derivatives are side bets to enrich the banking cartels footsoldiers like you. And nothing more.

I doubt many people on this site can explain exactly what derivatives have brought the system down.

I'm sure I am on many a camera as there were so many Police/security with videos. I was interviewed by 2 overseas televison crew and gave them a realistic view of what the protest was about. I told the Sky news crew that they should go and ask the police why they have enforced a "prison" on the area. Bank station was closed, but that was probably a good thing as with the number of protesters, someone would have been pushed onto the track.

I honestly would have thought he was a new "finance troll" if I hadn't witnessed some of the attitudes in the City first hand yesterday.

No humility.

No remorse.

After billions in bailouts!

You couldn't make it up.

I only saw the TV footage.

I do not know why protesters were penned in like that. What is the justification for that? Freedom to protest, to march, to come and go at will, what happened to that?

I am no way in favour of the window smashing etc, but equally do not agree with any right to impede lawful protest or trap people in an area when they have done no wrong.

To try to dissuade future peaceful protests by getting out some message "Protest and you'll be detained for hours in the street unable to go anywhere" is very worrying indeed. We all have a democratic right to peacefully protest and be free to do so.

This is what happened at the climate camp.

I managed to reclaim a street there for a while.

And you blame ALL the protesters so here we are.

A little humility and understanding on both sides and we might get somewhere, but right now, 2009, post epic bailouts I can't believe someone like you can't think that the onus for humility and understanding is very much on YOUR SIDE OF THE GOLDEN TRACKS.

It seems police strategy in these matters now rests entirely on a policy of mass internment without charge. What exactly is the legal basis for doing this?

Surely the way around this tactic is to deliberately start multiple protests in different areas of the city (but not converge on a single point). Also to make some, but not all of the protest locations public.
