China gags property boycott protester

By Richard Spencer in Beijing

(Filed: 22/05/2006)

China has silenced a businessman who called for a boycott of property purchases in protest at rising house prices.

Zou Tao, who sells golf equipment in Shenzhen, was so outraged with prices that were out of reach of most ordinary Chinese that he launched a petition calling for the public to stop buying real estate for three years. Within days, he had 30,000 signatures from across the country.

Until recently, demands for lower prices would have been tolerated by the government, which is trying to deflate the bubble gently and is also concerned about growing resentment of China's new rich, many of whom have become speculators.

But by this week, when Mr Zou had arrived in Beijing to put his case to the authorities, it had decided he had gone too far, not least in arguing that local government corruption was fuelling the dangerous boom in prices.

He was detained at Shenzhen airport for 10 hours before being allowed to board his flight to the capital.

"I was checking in and found my name was on a blacklist," he said last night. "Then two policemen came over and took away my ID card and my ticket."

When he landed, newspapers who had reported his case were banned from giving him any further publicity. Central television was told to scrap an interview it recorded with him.

The subject is deemed so sensitive not least because there have been warnings a property crash could in theory jeopardise the whole Chinese banking system.

The country's cities have seen double digit price rises. In Beijing, prices rose by 15 per cent in the first quarter alone. Shenzhen is among the worst hit, with rises of 35 per cent in a year.

If one of us started up a petition here like that we'd be labelled a terrorist organisation whose prime objective is to bring down the 'Miracle' economy!

Don't worry. You'd have no chance of being deported and you'd probably get free council accomodation for life once they've identified you as a terrorist. After all, you must be running from an oppressive regime as well!

I don't know all the old socialist like Karl Marks buried at Highbury would be spinning in their graves shouting Gunners. In fact they will be creating enough torque to drill themselves along underground, just like those silicone based creatures in the first series of Star Trek. Or have I been on Fred’s patches?

They buried Karl Marx at Highbury?

Shenzen is a key manufacturing area. Looks like that despite efforts the Chinese are losing the battle against rampant HPI and land price inflation.

It is only a matter of time before a wave of goods inflaiton in China crashes on the shores of now non-producers elsewhere.

The article is actually a few pages long and deep within I found:

Not keeping on top of his portfolio: “I bought a leasehold flat for £12,500 in cash, but never found a tenant and sort of forgot about it. I decided to sell and it was worth about £30,000 – but then my solicitor informed me that the property had been repossessed for non-payment of ground rent and service charges. They had sent the bills to the flat itself but because I did not live in it I did not receive them, so I was robbed of my £12,500.”

Where do I sign up for his newsletter? Can you hook me up TTRTR?

Sorry Muttley, Sorry Charlie, Sorry Karl Marks Fans, It's my ignorance of London, So who would he have supported then? 2 miles SW of Highbury?

Highgate is 2 miles NW of Highbury - these days he'd either be a Gooner or a Spurs fan but I think Arsenal were south London at one point.

Probably is seeing as he spends most of his days online maintaining his own website.

If he had one repossesed surely he would have been given a CCJ or something of that nature yet he was still lent more funds to expand his empire.

Oh well i'm sure we'll be reading about him in the years to come, Either he'll meet his target or he'll be a high profile bankrupt to add to the list.

but of course, his and Engel's work was inspired to a large degree by Marx's visits to Engels in Manchester, and the conditions of the proletariat there.

Therefore... Red Army! :D

Have you shown this to Homeless

Well Spotted, FancyPants, apart from my geography a lot of my remarks go over their heads. At least Marx and Engels, didn’t sit around all day in Starbucks talking about invisible hands like that Adam Smith.

Magpie, The Kinks posed in front of The Archway Tavern for the front cover of their LP The Muswell Hillbillies.

I gather that Special Branch and the Provos often used to share the craic in there after hours in the 70s & 80s.
