Have to ask though, why do the unpopular posters keep coming back, time and time again?

Do they like being infamous? Does it give their ego's a boost?

There's billion forums on the web. If they don't think there will be a HPC, what's their motivation.

Some deep rooted psychological reason I reckon. Denial or fear?

If everybody agreed withe everyone esle it would be a soapbox, not a forum.

In truth nobody knows if there will be an HPC or not and if there is how severe it will be - but by participating in the forum (provided debate is encouraged and groupthink discouraged) one has a better chance of being able to make an informed judgement - which is extremely valuable. Provided groupthink is discouraged.

There appears to a deeper pyschological need - other than ego boosting - which HPC meets for many posters. It is probably similar to the need met by standing in the bitter wind at the extremities of Crewe station for hours on end with a pencil, a camera and an anorak with other fellow unshaven, unsocialised males. I imagine.

I suspect you are proving the original poster's point by demonstrating that your views of our little "community" are informed by the loudest and most obnoxious posters. I share those views, but like youself have had the pleasure of meeting a lot of hardcore HPCers, the majority of whom seemed perfectly well socialised to me. Of course, on an internet forum they may not be the voices that demand the most attention...
