English councils poised to make cuts amid loss of commercial income

Just look at the local Government level in the scale.

In the levels above Parish/Town Councils (which are just residents opinion groups with tiny budgets) you then have professional and expensive hoards...... District/Borough Councils, County Councils, Local Economic Partnerships, Offices for Police and Crime Commissioners, Regional outposts for Government departments like BIS, and a host of other Quangos. These all have staff, many on £100k plus and mostly doing nothing of much use.

They should consolidate the Districts and LEPs into Unitary Authorities, abolish most of the Regional Departmental outposts and then have the unitary authorities report back into the departments.

If you just create a ~30 mile semicircle North - and I use 30 miles as thats a mid commute distance, there are:

Each has an elaborate management structure

Then theres all the NHS trust. Remember ~50% of NHS staff are non clinical. Also remember that a lot of the non clinical low end is contacted out.

I won't comment on councils, but to suggest there is to much waste in the NHS or excessive jobs, is rubbish.

The staff have to pay, to use their car parks ???.

The university required education, is good for job security, poor for pay and personal health.

The only place we will save money now, is by reducing the size of the older population.

Wards are already running on low numbers, an quite frankly, the level of treatment and care, is poor compared to the US/other major economies.

One way, to save money would be to restructure nursing and medicine, into one progressive discipline. 

Apart from that, theres not much left, the NHS is relying on EU nurses and doctors, it's already a very unattractive place to work.

GP pay in the UK is about 2x the French GP pay.

The NHS, has been cut, cut and cut some more. I've worked throughout the NHS and wouldn't be seen dead, in there now.

They can barely hold onto british doctors and nurses, if the goverment make more cuts there, well, get ready for more foreign staff.

Universities are struggling to recruit nurses, OTs, midwives and the stock which comes through, is much poorer. Medics less so because of the prestige associated.

As I said reforming nursing, OTs, medicine and other disciplines under just one discipline, would really help. The whole structure of the university training is excessive and most never use most of it, It's pointless.

They would be better off, training most as nurses and allowing them to specialise with more powers and autonomy.

On the wards, its pretty clear, particularly for nurses after 3 years of experience, they could pretty much do an SHOs job. Yet we are paying through the noise, for so many doctors. They created a PA role, that's just ******** tbh.

The other ways to make savings are eldery bed blockers, obesity and diabetes type 2, its poor lifestyle choices. Often patients are fit for discharge but no nursing home placement yet to be agreed yet.

The NHS, cannot be cut anymore, unless you wanna die, when the next wave comes.

No, a lot of low end NHS jobs are outsourced.

It's still 50 %+ non clinical plus outsourced staff.

There have been *NO* cuts to the NHS budget.

This is  spending in real terms.

600+ applications for a trainee job in a few days.  There are plenty of people who still want to work in the NHS.  The NHS is top heavy with room for a lot of cuts to balance things out.  The problem with the NHS is that it has become more about the money and hitting targets, than the care of the patient (or staff).
