dog
MFI rescue Will the EU view this type of deal as illegal state aid? Back in the 70's companies would be pushed to the brink and then bailed out. Perhaps things will be different this time.
music man
Interesteing point, did this thing really happen in the last recession? And do you think it representative of things to come. There's a lot of companies down in the financial gutter with them.

Elizabeth
By whom, dog? p I do believe there was an oil crisis between 75 and 79. But no no no we couldn't blame that. Must be tax. And it had nothing to do with exploration or the lack of it. It was producer cartels wot dun it. Must be tax. And those were middle eastern cartels own by royal families who were already collecting tax as well.
dog
By whom, dog? p Bad unions, bad management and bad government. They have all done their bit at various times to screw companies up.
oracle
the answer is YES,the EU will rule it illegal. not for any real breach of regulation.....after all,the EU frequently bail out airbus and co.it's just another weapon they will use to make us join, even if we don't want to. ..if we even hinted at pulling out of EU,it would spark a major recession and trade war(even though we don't have much to trade with these days),and we would be looking to uncle sam for protection. while US wants us as a trading platform into europe,we will end up dangling around in no-mans-land. The Masked Tulip
What goes around comes around... If you live long enough you will undoubtedly see everything repeated. Yes, in the last crash I remember companies going to the Government for bail out, some received it, others did not and then there was much angst from the EU about whether it was fair or not, broke EU rules, yawn, yawn, yawn. Some of these so-called businesses, IMPO, are simply speculative market stalls that Delboy would feel at home running - they do well in economic booms as, IMPO, no direct result of the highly paid management but merely because the economy is booming. As soon as things go bad - and technically, according to all we read in the Meedja, the economy is still supposed to be doing well - the companies tank. Inevitably, IMPO, the management get paid off handsomely, the company survives in name and crawls along until the next economic boom when, once again, whatever management is in place makes huge bonuses and pats themselves on the back for being wonderful business leaders... then the economy tanks... and so it repeats.... When are people going to wake up to the fact that GOOD business leaders make money for their companies during the BAD times and not just the good! Thwe quality of British management, IMPO, is pretty dire indeed!

timmy_30
Bad unions, bad management and bad government. They have all done their bit at various times to screw companies up. Don't forget a fairly bloody awful monetary policy in the early 1980s that did to British industry what Hitler had failed to.
Goat
Separately or in concert? Conspiracy or ****-up? p Unions in concert with weak (Labour) government not willing to fight them. Its always tempting to blame management but IMHO, they are usually left in an impossible position by the others. Most "mistakes" by management are usually forced upon them by other parties.
