Do you think, perhaps, that the much publicised landslides is the cause for people staying away from holidaying in Whitby this year?

Perhaps people fear the idea of their holiday cottage falling off a cliff?

A friend of mine who visits the place regularly has commented to me several times about asking prices coming down in the town, especially so when compared with Swansea where my friend now lives.

Hi,

as promised I report back on the state of things in Whitby. TBH, it was difficult to gauge. Some days the town was heaving, some v quite. One interesting observation was that on an evening, the town, other than the new overpriced Weatherspoons, was like a ghost town. This makes me think that the numbers of people were made up largely of day trippers.

On the Regatta weekend, I was very pleased to see that despite Elf and Safety, the greasy pole competition has been resurrected. Sitting in the Ship, watching it, got accosted by one of the locals, accused of being an 'incomer'. "No", said I, born and bred. He then went completely off on one, as only Whitby folk can do, about the 'White Settlers' as he called them. He said that the whole of the East Side was holiday cottages, which I suppose to born out by the fact that all bar one of the cottages that slipped down the cliff were holiday homes. He was not happy and said that it was driving locals out of town as they could not afford housing.

Agree. Whitby still had a working port up until the COOP was built (88ish).

Do you remember those huge rolls of paper that used to be unloaded onto lorries and then driven out of the town? Yet another set of jobs gone there.

And talking of the Co-op, they seem to be intent on committing suicide in the town with the new parking arrangements. I've stopped shopping there as got fed up with driving into town, sitting in queues, to find that the rubber necking day trippers had taken all the parking - apparently the Co-op car park is cheaper than the local council ones. See here for some of the debates around the new arrangements.

Question for one-percent:

Do you know anything about this place:

http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-26890131.html

I've always like the place but I know nothing about its history or owners.

The Pink! The Pink!!

It looks empty. The furniture in it looks like the placed has been dressed.

The garden looks at bit unkempt too.

I know that it has been on a long time, but not any of its background. Picture eight shows a door onto Skinner Street and this used to be the entrance to the café in this house. It does look to be unlived in and my gut feeling is that it has been bought by one of the local speculators - perhaps that ex police woman or the estate agent who met an untimely end recently?

Well it would put me off buying on the East side, but more importantly, those little cottages were always the starter homes, picked up for a song as no one wanted to live in an old damp hovel with no parking and very difficult access. Now, they are at least on a par, price wise, with the more substantial semis that would traditionally be second stepper homes.

My feeling is that prices are dropping as they have run out of greater fools plus prices where the holiday home folks live, such as the boro area or Leeds, have dropped or at least are stagnant, stopping mewing. As discussed on this thread, the numbers don't add up and must be costing these folk lots of dosh.

I remember in my youth going to the yacht club and this was full of out of towners, giving it large with "I've got a yacht don't you know". The common view however was that the definition of a pleasure boat was a hole in the water that you kept poring money into. I think that the holiday home has taken over in terms of bragging rights from the yachts, but there still seems to be plenty of these in the harbour. Perhaps now the done thing is to have the boat AND the fisherman's cottage. Just a pity there are no more fishermen (or fish). Another set of jobs...

It wasn't Peter sodding Budd?

He does have a point - that would tie up with the drop-off of Easkdale's rolls.

I always avoid that stretch - greasy pole or not.

Too many brain dead, mouth breathers staggering up and down.

Drinking-wise, I like the Middle Earth - happy memories from 20 odd years ago and its too far away for the majority of the tourists

And The Plough - cheap. But I cannot go in the Jolly Sailors. Don't know why. I can't.

Duke of York - great view.

On pubs, did you notice if the re-furbs that were the bottom house ever shift?

Zoopla a=only shows 3 sales on Green Lane over the last 7 years. Eek!

Yep. All the way from Finland if I remember correctly.

They did wood was well.

Whitby was never a good port - too small + tidal.

The rot started with the loss of the rail freight yard.

Lugging artics full of timber and paper up Blue Bank isn't sane.

Best to go to Tees Port.

No, A ventress (probably not spelt correctly). Scary lot from what I recall, but an interesting conversation.

Know what you mean about Marine Parade, but the Ship was my Dad's local so try not to notice the boro Neanderthals wandering around.

Have you a link to the drop in rolls - would make interesting reading!

Talk of those pubs brings back memories. I drank in the Middle Earth when it first opened. Does it still run a micro-brewery? The plough, yes another good one. A couple of years ago did the usual pub crawl. The Dolphin before it was refurb (and quite nice it is now too), was a place to wipe your feet on exit, rather than entry. The price for two drinks was around 8 quid and the plough was half that. Didn't seem busy though in there. Duke of York too much of a tourist trap but do use occasionally for the view. The Shambles has an equally good view and a terrace, but was in there this summer and it was v. empty and felt rundown. Do you remember when it was the Burberry's factory? A lot of my mates worked there earning really good money.

Re the bottom house, did look up as I passed it and both of the houses it has been turned into seem to be occupied (at least curtains at the window and no for sale signs) but whether they sold or are rented, not sure. Have you seen the proposals for Hoggarth's old factory next door? It's all in the Gazette, but can't make out who the pwoperdy developers are on this.

didn't realise it came in from Finland, but makes sense, also remember the logs going off on the lorries.

Notice that two of the three cottages on Cliff Street have had their prices dropped recently, but still silly money!

(sorry this is turning into aWhitby chat between me + one)

I was lucky. I only had to put up with female Ventress' at Eskdale. Mind you, other than the dress its hard to tell sexes apart . . .

Wasn't Whitby's 4 in the bed (B+B comp on CH4) a Ventress before she married? She was on there with Mrs Siggy.

Whitby is rapidly turning into a a day trip to be sick for most of 'boro.

I have a serious theory on 'boro.

'boro -> Whitby is ~40minutes.

'boro -> York is ~50 minutes by train.

I've family + friends in York. There are huge complaints about the 'night life economy' in York esp. race day.

York's always been a bit rough at the edge; it was a blue collar town.

It has been getting really bad over the last few years.

'boro going out has been getting so bad that a large number of 'boro people (+ Darlo) have started to do they're socialising outside of the towns.

Understandable if you've ever tried a night out in 'boro.

'boro people have always visited Whitby + Scarborough - the 93 (x93) is full of the bottom end.

Now I think there is an entire exodus of 'boro people going out drinking in Whitby + York.

They are now being followed by the people who cause them to avoid 'boro.

I don't think I've mentioned the ex-WPC in the current threads.

Years ago, I did post this article:

http://www.thesundaytimes.co.uk/sto/style/homes_and_gardens/article53084.ece

Sadly behind the paywall. Eddy's in it too.

Years ago (early-mid 80s), when I was at Eskdale, we were all marched down to the library (E-block?) to have a careers talk.

One of the talks was about typing at the tech given by the divine Ms D F-H.

I don't think she had the double barrel then.

I remember it as she was relatively attractive and one of the Lockers told me a dirty story about her - which may or maybe true (anyone who's seen they're 'reported catch' will understand that families struggle with the verite).

Anyhow, totally forgotten about her till this article. This was when Whitby was going nuts sales wise - roughly late 2001 to late 2006, when the sales hit a brick wall; just check out the LR sales numbers for the last 6 years.

Anyhow, googling about, shows Ms D F-H (and her possible partner) were very active. A quick check on companies house shows them very active.

I think they bought the penthouse in the mini-Metropole (opposite the old Metropole).

As well as French + London places.

Anyhow, the thing that got me seeing red is them turning what was Blnkies (Scaletrix + firework memories for me) into a 'Le Petit Jardin' - a home based emporium of tat, selling twigs in vases.

No new news on the bloke. He was buried the other day. I don't doubt he's left a massive fianancial hole in various places. Time will tell on this.

As far as new cars - same as everywhere else Motability (a large percentage of the area issigned off on the sikc) and finance - pay £200/month for xxx (balance of 6K remaining to be paid after 3 years).

The inquest report has made it to the WG website.

Normal type of comments from these sort of things - his family blame the wife and ignore the fact he was unstable and was heading for a fall.

They mention the car crash - which i thought only broke his arm, death in family and 'business concerns' and fear of 'public embarrassment'.

What do I make from it?

Sounds likes a manic depressive who was way over leveraged.

The EA business is still going - for now. Let's see how events pan out - bits of it sound like those idiots who kill themselves for their family to claim the life insurance without realising that suicide cancels the policy.

Hi spyguy, yes saw that too. For me it said typical 'A' type character who, when they hit the buffers for whatever reason, cannot stoke/stroke their ego (read business model goes t*ts up) and then are unable to cope unlike us mere mortals. There was also, I think, a few days before, a puff piece about how the estate agency had won some kind of accolade which seemed a little stage managed.

Couldn't see how to edit post but wanted to add how on earth does someone who built a career in property in the biggest housing boom ever, find themselves over leveraged, I.e. In debt, especially with all the sh*t flats and other stuff they had built. Not that I'm doubting your analysis, just can't see how he could have been so inept.

Bare in mind he set us on his own in 94-ish.

The Whitby market was still cr.p then but not falling.

In fact, compared to today, the number of transaction in 94 probably look booming.

EAs make their money on the number of sales, not the price of those sales.

Sounds like he was pretty off the scale manic/OTT.

I read the poof piece as a 'Look at this! Look at this! (Dont look at that)' piece.

Forget what it was for - Best award for an EA beginning with A and ending N type.

I thought he set up ages ago, but bow to your greater knowledge on this. Wasn't he into pwoperdee development, responsible for those horrors under the new bridge? The seem to be on land that coul have formally belong to the White House on spital bridge.

I think he worked for RIchardson + Son during the 80s.

I guess he got laid off in 93/94 - I don't anyone would be have stupid enough to start a new EA then.

But he was nuts . . .

He had his names to various schemes.

Its murkey if he ever had skin in the game.

He obviously was nuts deep in the Whitehall thing but that seems to be scamming of his ex PILs.

There's no record of any sale but there has been a lot of work done there.

(You can google on this. The Northern echo had some poof piece)

And I think he was involved money wise in the good awful new stuff at the top of Pannet Park.

You don't like Whitehall either?

They are a bit err vertical.

They spoil the view to and from the river.

I dislike those scammy cottages (engine shed) built on the other side more.

They're like a terrace of sh1thouses.

And spoil the view from Esk Terrace, which is one of favourite streets in Whitby.

In reply to your later post, no but intrigued. It might be that we are different ages so know of different folk. Will ask round though. Any hint on who?

She was annoyingly vocal rather than a big player.

She's a few years older than me so we've our paths never crossed.

But she does seem to be very very over leveraged.

Just curious thats all.

Still I guess people like her can always fall back on her Potash shares . . .

I'm really not sure how planning permission was given for ANY of the developments here (local council being run like a banana republic perhaps?). Telly-tubby land at the top of Chubb Hill is particularly poor. Both in style and build by the looks of it; seems to have been incredibly difficult to shift the flats (sorry, apartments). I always thought that it was Harrisons garage that made money on this. The car dealership had been there for years, so no land to buy, just the monstrosity to build. Another business gone! I do think that the block halfway down Chubb Hill is much better designed, but I understand that the charges on these are prohibitly expensive.

Agree with the 'sheds' too. They look just like the terraces that can be bought in Liverton Mines and Loftus for around £50 grand, just newer and smaller. They might have been built as holiday homes, but think they will become the slums of the future. That part of the river has been totally spoilt. There were rumours a few years ago that a 'village' (read lots of holiday homes) was going to be built on the old docks and quay car parks. Theme Park Whitby. What on earth is going to happen when folk cannot afford to buy holiday homes. Oh, wait a minute, they can't now.

Back on our original topic, he did seem to be very good at marketing himself. That second link was particularly sick inducing, so no thanks on the offer of googling. I know he was an incomer, but one of the things that I have always hated about Whitby is that many people tend to go around 'look at me, look how good I am' and it is all based on wealth (or fur coat/ no knickers wealth). He seemed to have bought into this particular trait quite well. Still, shouldn't speak ill of the dead and all that...

I think - and Whitby whispers are like chinese whispers without the verification - Harrisons stubbed up the land and Ed provided a lot of time and maybe some money.

They are well fking ugly - solid, tall wall, right against the pavement.

These have been done for how long now- 5, 6 years??

Chubb Hill - there's a few on the go. The biggy is the functional english building (remember the Karlicks?)

I believe these are listed by virtue of being old + near the park.

I think the people are too late and have bitten off a lot more than they could chew.

50K is rich for Loftus. These places will go back to there normal earning multiples - about 1.5 wages, so about 25K.

As far as holiday park whitby - saltwick bay's always full.

What are the places from the 80s, just beyond the viaduct?

These places are permanently for sale - the lease species they can only be occupied for 10 months.

People cannot afford to keep the mortgage on a holiday home, never mind buy one.

You'll see the traditional double dip, which always follow the double up in holiday places.

I think this goes back to the old Wessie thing. (I have some wessies in the family - Ive still got a lifetime supply of NCB waterproofs!)

After the war, wessies were the higher percentage of visitors to the region.

They also had full-time, well paying jobs - trust me, by the 70s miners were in the top 10% wage earners in the country.

People on the coast, in the main, did not.

There was a lot of snearing, mainly from people who were not miners.

In the main, most wessies don't have a pot to p1ss in now. Sooner they scrap the free OAP pass the better.

Oh and don't get me started on 'boro scum.

I guess Ed would have visited as a kid - he was what 60ish, from Hebden. So that would tie in.

The traits pretty common in the natives too.

I knew a girl from eskdale who was as rought and loose as f.ck at school.

Sometime in her 20s she became Hycnyth Bucket after having a job for a few years.

Now she's back on benefits full - some made up sicky like ME.

All before she's 45 FFS!

OK, thats enough people. Back to property ...

I have a weekly search of Whitby (radius 3 miles) and Scabby (5 miles radius).

Just to have a quick look.

I noticed these two:

http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-28255485.html?premiumA=true

469K, hmm,

6 bedrooms OK.

'Although this fantastic house does not offer allocated parking, and the sea views are limited to the Velux in the bathroom of the master bedroom and from the garden, it is a truly superb property worthy of viewing.'

So 0.5 million to park my car in the road and rubber neck at the sea.

All for, what, ~25 times average local wages.

And this:

http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-40994845.html

There's three lots of land behind Broomfield terrace come up for sale.

Think gardens rather than building plots.

'This plot of land extends for an area in excess of 20 m depth from the footpath and was at one time used as a garden area and the site is somewhat overgrown. The land has no road frontage and there are no vehicle access points from the land onto any adjacent highway, The only access is on foot across adjoining land in a separate ownership. '

20K and its yours.

Sandsend is mad. See these examples:

http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/find.html?searchType=SALE&locationIdentifier=REGION%5E21484&insId=2&radius=0.0&displayPropertyType=&minBedrooms=&maxBedrooms=&minPrice=&maxPrice=&retirement=&partBuyPartRent=&maxDaysSinceAdded=&includeSSTC=true&_includeSSTC=on&sortByPriceDescending=&primaryDisplayPropertyType=&secondaryDisplayPropertyType=&oldDisplayPropertyType=&oldPrimaryDisplayPropertyType=&newHome=&auction=false

I would have thought, in particular, the one up the valley and the new build would have no chance of selling, but it seems that they just might. See these previously sold:

http://www.rightmove.co.uk/house-prices/detail.html?country=england&locationIdentifier=STREET%5E1472863&searchLocation=The+Valley&referrer=landingPage

Al these, again up the valley all new build, built by Lordy. Must be incomers. But still, if I has half a million, would not want to live on the windswept north east coast miles from the nearest shops or cultural centre (does boro count as a cultural centre?)

If Whitby is special then Sandsend is specialerer.

Sandsends is nice esp. as you don't get that many people clogging it up and most ofthe 'boro traffic comes down the Guisborough road.

But its not 1/2 million special esp. no parking etc etc.

I would guess the place is a holiday or second home - the OTT nautical decor is a bit of an indicator.

I like Sandsend, or rather I like walking to Sandsend, see if anyone I know is fishing from the carpark and then walk back.

Did the good Lord make you slave in his sawmill, or did one of his Stainthorpe lackeys dud you?

I don't have that differal forlock reflex you get with people living near the estates.

Our local moor is owned by Stricklands but they've been pretty absent for decades. The commoner stuff is left to the court Leet.
