UNITED NATIONS - The UN Security Council will probably convene an emergency session on Saturday on the escalating tension between North and South Korea, council diplomats said.
"We will very likely have a meeting this afternoon," a diplomat told Reuters on condition of anonymity. Diplomats said the meeting was tentatively scheduled for 3 p.m., although it could change.
The meeting was called at the request of Russia, an envoy said. It was unclear what the 15-member council planned to do. Diplomats said they hoped to issue some kind of statement to help ease the tension in the region.

[Toto here] Been reading up on the historians take on major/world wars. Historians say that often wars are begun much earlier than peak conflict. For example, many historians consider that WW2 started in 1931 when Japan invaded Manchuria (11 years before the US entered the conflict). One author I was reading has concluded that history will record that WW3 started with 9/11. This has led to the invasion of Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan and Yemen (yes Yemen has been targeted by the US). We just have not yet reached peak conflict. Now it looks like the Korean peninsula may kick off.

China fisherman dies in clash with S Korea coast guard
The crew of a Chinese trawler and a South Korean patrol ship have clashed, leaving one fisherman dead and two missing, South Korean officials say.
The clash reportedly happened as the coast guards tried to prevent Chinese boats from fishing illegally off South Korea's west coast.
Video filmed by the coast guard shows officers fighting with fishermen wielding metal bars.
Four coast guard officers were injured, reports say.
About 50 Chinese fishing boats were in waters off the South Korean city of Gunsan at the time of the clash, coast guard spokesman Ji Kwan-tae said, according to the Associated Press.
Mr Ji said one of the boats intentionally struck the patrol ship to try to allow the others to sail back into their waters - but the boat sank after the impact.

I'd suggest that the best way to deal with North Korea is a massive nuclear strike to wipe out its nuclear capabilities and military. NK is a nuclear power now, so its got to play the nuclear war game. Its been trying to re-start the war for years and we now known that China won't help NK in a new war. Russia and China don't want the pollution a nuclear war will bring, which is why they are asking for talks. They know USA/ S.Korean and Japan have had enough and a pre-emptive nuclear strike would be easier now than in a decade.

North Korea just wants something - food, money, xboxes, whatever.

They will puff and sulk and they will get them... and then they will go quiet again until they want some more.

The only reason they are puffing now is that the US has stopped feeding them and bowing to their blackmail. The US is adopting a policy of let China help North Korea and if China won't help us to solve the North Korean problem then we ain't going to even go to the meetings.

The US, Japan and South Korea have been having meetings by themselves over this.

It could result in a crisis which, briefly, causes the global markets to dip but I doubt it will come to anything more.

And your justification for killing millions of civilians is what, exactly?

'They looked at me in a funny way'?

I'd suggest that the best way to test the seriousness of such a proposal would be to ship the proposer and their children to within eyeball-melting distance of the strike zone, and see if they still suggest the same.

MaCarthy wanted to use nukes during the 1950's, China's involvement prevented it. Now China is disinterested there could be a serious attempt to remove the NK leadership.

The war would probably go nuclear at the start, so why wait? NK could build up sufficient stocks and refine their missile technology to threaten the entire world. They are fanatical enough to use nuclear weapons; Saddam and the Communists were far more rational then NK has ever been.

BTW, defending Korea would be a UN task, so we all may get the chance to get within blast distance.

What is the causal link between 9/11 and the current Korean stand-off?

What is the causal link between 9/11 and the current Korean stand-off?

Afghanistan->Pakistan->Iraq->Iran->China->Japan->Korea

No shortage of linkages.

If one looks at the way WW3 WW2 unfolded, I would say that one should watch one of the US Allies. Say Israel?

In the next year or two, watch for some sort of escalation in another part of the world such as incursions by Israel into southern Lebanon, Syria or Iran, as the world economy continues to sink...

Israel's government is at risk of moving somewhere to the right of Adolf Hitler's Germany, see here...

Air Force Global Strike Command SPECIAL ALERT

"All active personnel serving with the Air Force Global Strike Command have been issued a special alert on Dec 18. Air Force Global Strike Command is responsible for deploying Long Range Strategic Bombers including B-52 and B-2 bombers. There are believed to be 30 B-52 and 11 B-2 bombers stationed at AndersonAir Force base on the Island of Guam. The USAF 36th Wing would be used as the main bomber force in advent of a war on the Korean Peninsula. The Amateur radio operator affiliation known as Sky Watchers has been reporting a substantial increase in Air Traffic at AndersonAir Force base since Dec 15. Strategic bombers deployed from Guam would rendezvous with Fighters from the 5th Air Force stationed in Japan before entering a combat area such as North Korea."

Don't know how credible this source is but Korea Times reported that stealth bombers were deployed to Guam in 2009.
