Property Scandal...

The next time Kirst Allsop spouts rubbish about there not being enough land, then someone should ask her to read this:

http://www.newstatesman.com/200409200005

"A few rich people, many of them aristocrats, own 69 per cent of the land in Britain. As a result, house prices are so high, millions can't afford to buy a home. The NS launches a campaign to end this feudal system"

"Yet something must be done to address this scandal of inequality. With interest rates rising and with property prices at a dangerous and unsustainable height, the second wave of repossessions may not be too far away. "

Someone at the end of 2004 knew it was all going to come to a head...and it did !!!

You cant build on that land as its in the countryside and it protected... ending the system of a select few owning all the land wont fix anything. Its the planning laws stop you from using land.

Erm.... she is the daughter of Charles Henry Allsopp, sixth Baron Hindlip.

I guess she is a member of the aristocracy? Maybe she is right? Maybe there is a very limted supply of land on the open market if 69% is owned by large landowners?

Maybe someone needs to ask her that too when they tell her about all the new land we suddenly know of. If these kind aristoprats are keeping the land as a public service they wont mind giving it back

That's how our Kirsty got started in interior design - working for Daddy's company -

Hindlip (and Snogsbury, or something).

The Hindlip name and Manor go back to the Domesday Book, at least :-

William de Beauchamp was apparently holding Hindlip in demesne in 1164–79, (fn. 15) but in 1197 Margaret 'of Hindlip' paid 5 marks to have the right of half a kinght's fee there against John D'Abitot and Maud his wife. (fn. 16) John D'Abitot, who subsequently held Hindlip for a knight's fee, (fn. 17) probably died about 1230, when his son and heir Geoffrey is described as lord of Hindlip. (fn. 18) Geoffrey was afterwards knighted. (fn. 19) Both he and his son Alexander, who seems to have succeeded him about 1250, (fn. 20) gave lands in Hindlip to the hospital of St. Wulfstan, Worcester. (fn.

Of that so called 69% a lot of it already will have housing on it (Crown estates being a prime example). Alot of it probably is of no use for housing because of where it is ( Thousands of acres in Cumbria....really what are you going to do with thousands of homes in Cumbria exactly ?). IF youa re after people who truely control the best bits of bulding land near towns and villages it's the large supermarket chains who holdhundreads of Acres of prime development land either because they want to build a supermarket or becasue they want to make sure that there competitors are not able to buld a supermarket....

the main reason house prices went mental was becasue of the rise in house prices in teh south that pushed outwards. The south is pretty choca to be honest and so unless you want to build on green belt (which we don't) there isn't much to do. And remmebr alot of this land isn't standing idle it's growing FOOD, which according to the UN is more important thatn housing. Of course you may not think that the production of FOOD is a worthwhile use for land.

A useful comment there from Lord Ukdaasfan

Fair points really but 1% of the population owning 69% of the land does sort of force everyone else to the bits that are available, some people would like to live in a house on a nice bit of land in Cumbria.

Anyways, I'd like to see the point put to her the next time she rabbits on about there "only being so much land in the UK". Also, I'd like to see someone say to her there's only so much Gold in the world but people arent climbing over themselves to buy that because it too f**king expensive.
