dhpcza
I don't actually have any (money that is!). Though my dad has an account with A+L and some savings with Nationwide. Who are the safer banks to leave your cash with?

DrBob
Nationwide should be fine. It's a very large mutual society, and as far as I can tell, their business model doesn't rely on securitising loans (they have a huge deposit base). Alliance & Leicester are potentially on the firing line.

garybug
Any thoughts on the CO-OP Bank. I would have thought with their ethical lending policy sub prime & over exposure would have been a big no no. Happy ( ) to be proved wrong though... Oliver Sutton
I don't actually have any (money that is!). Though my dad has an account with A+L and some savings with Nationwide. Who are the safer banks to leave your cash with? I think all the banks are safe now. The government can't guarantee one and not another. IMHO HSBC give a good rate on their internet account. I'd ignore that £35,000 guarantee as well. Probably worthless. Also. If you have money in the Isle of Man their compenstaion scheme is even worse. only 75% upto £20,000. Had trouble prizing this information out of them. Dunno about the Channel Isles but worth finding out.

The Ayatollah Buggeri
National Savings and/or a building society would be my choice. My cash savings are (and have been for a long time) split between Nationwide and Scarborough BS. The latter doesn't offer a particularly good rate on their cash ISA, but as far as I know it's solid, regional in focus and operates the traditional BS business model. Nationwide are Britain's largest mortgage lender and the large building society (group assets £137bn)
Oliver Sutton
Good time to buy NR shares then! No. I meant the deposits are safe. Wouldn't touch their stock with a bargepole.
234SALE
1. A&L have a wholesale market loan to deposit ratio of 165% 2. Nationwide are Britain's largest mortgage lender and the large building society (group assets £137bn) YES Northern Rock was at 328% which is crazy But I see 2 others HBOS and BB at 180% ... I think you'll find money from these will enter A&L reducing the ratio Edited September 17, 2007 by 234SALE
garybug
Decided not to take any chances with the COOP - pulled all bar £2.5k out today, with the rest going into NS&I. Will sleep better tonight. In fact, can I buy shares in NS & I?
Disillusioned
Another question to ponder: Fixed or variable rate account?
