If you can find a good deal via its own website or one of the last minute sites it is worth it. I have stayed at the Crowns Plaza. Had a lovely meal in the restaurant. The waiter offered me dessert and I could not decide so he brought me a plate full of mixed desserts. To this day I am not sure whether he was after a tip or wanted to date me. Van gogh museam is at the main train station now. Some good designer shopping near there too. I went to the heineken museam it's worth a go you get 2 tokens for 2 free pints in the bar at the end of the tour. Van gogh museam is at the main train station now. Some good designer shopping near there too. By the time I landed both my ears had gunked up and I elt like sh*t. I ended up walking across a road - which I thought was predestrianised - but, unkown to me, there was a car behind me trying to get past me as I weaved, in my now flu ridden state, from side to side. I suddenly realised that loads of people were staring at me and some Dutch guy came and led me to the pavement. Turned out that the driver of the car had got out and had been shouting at me, calling me a druggie, for several minutes totally unknown to myself. The red light district is full of stoned horny blokes (mostly geordies and yorkshire types), staggers, and chinese taking picture of the window girls. Yeah, there is the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, Anne Frank House, Stedelijk Museum and lots of other things to do. But it is January and will be cold and potentially very wet, especially in the evenings. Get yourself to Haarlem, its about a 15 minute train ride from Amsterdam central. You'll get cheaper hotels, a real charming Dutch city with great open air market in the square on the weekends, and lots of great shopping that you won't see in Amsterdam. And you can zip back and forth between the Dam and Haarlem for a few euros, if you really need to see the big city. The pubs and restaurants around the central church are great, and I highly recommend Wilma and Alberts for a great atmosphere and awesome steaks. They even have a live in cat that hangs about looking for scraps... if you're a cat person. Wherever you end up you still have to pay that sh1t tourist tax. I ended up walking across a road - which I thought was predestrianised - but, unkown to me, there was a car behind me trying to get past me as I weaved, in my now flu ridden state, from side to side. I suddenly realised that loads of people were staring at me and some Dutch guy came and led me to the pavement. Turned out that the driver of the car had got out and had been shouting at me, calling me a druggie, for several minutes totally unknown to myself. I saw plenty of people get hit by cyclists after wandering into the cycle lanes must have been stoned or something. I did treat partner to a surprise trip away once at "The Jolly Hotel Carlton" which cost a fortune and was a bit like a posh Travelodge. Very well located in the Spui area near the flower market IIRC (and I may not) but not worth the money. Haarlem is beautiful as is Delft. Any partcular reason for picking Amsterdam? Some might say - the coffeeshops, the canals, the history (WW2/Anne Frank), the architecture, the people, the atmosphere (especially in the summer).. While Amsterdam isn't a big city and the trams are excellent, it might help to be somewhere near some of the things that you plan to do. And if you're going out for evening dinner, get there early. Before 7PM. Not joking.
