Swiss Hotel - Swissotel - right slap in the centre of Amsterdam, and about a 10 to 15 minute flat walk straight ahead as you leave the railway station, is a place I love staying.

They do a great brekkie spread including lots of Dutch chocolate stuff.

Was hoping to spend nearer to £250 rather than £350. Anyone for the crowne plaza?

Scratch that, she says £150

Ouch! Gone up. It is popular. If you can find a good deal via its own website or one of the last minute sites it is worth it.

I have stayed at the Crowns Plaza. Had a lovely meal in the restaurant. The waiter offered me dessert and I could not decide so he brought me a plate full of mixed desserts.

To this day I am not sure whether he was after a tip or wanted to date me. I remember him with affection and he perhaps remembers me as that tight :o Brit.

Had good reports about The Delta Hotel its near dam square.

http://www.delta-hotel.nl/home/

I went to the heineken museam it's worth a go you get 2 tokens for 2 free pints in the bar at the end of the tour.

Van gogh museam is at the main train station now. Some good designer shopping near there too.

Be careful crossing the roads it goes

Bike lane

Car lane

Tram lane

then opposite direction:

Tram lane

I had a cold on a flight from Barcelona to Amsterdam. By the time I landed both my ears had gunked up and I elt like sh*t.

I ended up walking across a road - which I thought was predestrianised - but, unkown to me, there was a car behind me trying to get past me as I weaved, in my now flu ridden state, from side to side.

I suddenly realised that loads of people were staring at me and some Dutch guy came and led me to the pavement. Turned out that the driver of the car had got out and had been shouting at me, calling me a druggie, for several minutes totally unknown to myself.

:D

Remember, the trams and cars are just like the pedal bikes now. If you see a parked car or tram free just get in the driver seat and drive it to wherever you wish to go ;) The Dutch won't mind.

The review sites are not so favourable to the delta. We want to stay pretty close. Will try not to cross the road. Ever.

The dam is a damn ripoff. The red light district is full of stoned horny blokes (mostly geordies and yorkshire types), staggers, and chinese taking picture of the window girls.

Yeah, there is the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, Anne Frank House, Stedelijk Museum and lots of other things to do.

But it is January and will be cold and potentially very wet, especially in the evenings.

Get yourself to Haarlem, its about a 15 minute train ride from Amsterdam central.

You'll get cheaper hotels, a real charming Dutch city with great open air market in the square on the weekends, and lots of great shopping that you won't see in Amsterdam.

And you can zip back and forth between the Dam and Haarlem for a few euros, if you really need to see the big city.

The pubs and restaurants around the central church are great, and I highly recommend Wilma and Alberts for a great atmosphere and awesome steaks. They even have a live in cat that hangs about looking for scraps... if you're a cat person.

Wherever you end up you still have to pay that sh1t tourist tax.

I saw plenty of people get hit by cyclists after wandering into the cycle lanes must have been stoned or something. It seemed to be very

anti-car in the centre all set up for bikes or trams predominantly, seemed taxis could go where they want though.

May go to Haarlem them for a trip. Not looking to do much. Supposed to be a break not an expedition.

This sounds good. I might do this myself - but I would wait till it is warmer as I find Ams bitterly cold in the winter. I would wait until May.

Amsterdam hotels tend to be expensive or bad. Or both.

I've stayed at several in the course of various conferences. If I had to choose one, it would be http://www.parkplaza.co.uk/amsterdam-hotel-nl-1012lg/netamst. But I think you need to get a good room allocated: mine was on the top floor and on a quiet side of the hotel.

Found it. Yes, I blogged about that hotel when it was fresh in my mind. https://bahumbug.wordpress.com/2008/04/07/corporate-hotel-bookings/

You're going to Amsterdam but don't want to get baked, or laid.

Sounds like my wife's cousin's recent trip with his mum and dad. Tapping him up for recommendations now, though I daresay he's in bed already.

i thought the netherlands was just one big conurbation.

Indeed, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Randstad

I've been to the Netherlands (Holland is a region!) about a dozen times, but only to Amsterdam proper only a couple of times...Didn't think a lot of it personally...Constantly hearing scare stories about muggings, etc.. Probably not much different to any other medium sized city..

Have been to Amsterdam many times though we've stayed in cheap(er) B & Bs/room only places or rented an apartment.

I did treat partner to a surprise trip away once at "The Jolly Hotel Carlton" which cost a fortune and was a bit like a posh Travelodge. Very well located in the Spui area near the flower market IIRC (and I may not) but not worth the money.

Haarlem is beautiful as is Delft.

Any partcular reason for picking Amsterdam?

Some might say - the coffeeshops, the canals, the history (WW2/Anne Frank), the architecture, the people, the atmosphere (especially in the summer)..

While Amsterdam isn't a big city and the trams are excellent, it might help to be somewhere near some of the things that you plan to do.

And if you're going out for evening dinner, get there early. Before 7PM. Not joking.

Casa di David, Burgers Patio and for the best pizza ever, Pinsa's is a must - out of this world.
