  1. Following on from "the perfect pop record" thread a while back... Here's my take - for info/context I'm 37 now (can't quite believe it) and haven't been clubbing in a while, but back in my heyday (LOL) Peach @ Camden Palace and Freedom @ Bagleys were the average weekend plus a fair dose of G-A-Y @ The Astoria. So hard to pick the "best of all time" and condense it down to a really short list. So in categories, beginning with cheese and Euro: -- Euro/Hi-NRG House Traffic (vocals Yvonne Yaney) Everyday of my Life 1994 This is as far as I'm concerned, perfect. And unique. There is nothing that sounds like it. If you know different, I want to know... Must admit I thought this was so, so rare and nobody had every heard it over here. Until I came across this: Meanwhile, if you want something that lifts you any time and puts a grin on your face, it doesn't get much higher than this: Ultrahigh Stay with Me or anything by the marvellous Urban Cookie Collective, here's the megamix: .. and of course, this one, a real classic (is that really Aretha Franklin or does it just sound like her? Never did know) Starlight Numero Uno .. and this one, going bonkers in Tenerife at the time... on the floor at one of the clubs on the front (Bobby's?) at Playa de las Americas: DJ Quicksilver Bellissima And going about as high as you can go (so wish I'd seen them live): The Time Frequency The Ultimate High

This was in a film I saw last week. I didn't get to Shazam it in time but I had a guess at the artist. Within seconds I'd located it on YouTube. That's never happened that easily before. Ramirez - El Ritmo Barbaro

.. and the ultimate dance tune of the year surely has to be this piece of genius. If you're into 90s sounds, you'll love this. Think Tilt, Jam and Spoon, Solar Stone and Way Out West mixed together. Beautiful. Bicep - Vale

This is, apparently, the most streamed track ever. From 2017. Spanish. 24M likes. . Luis Fonsi - Despacito ("Slowly") Have to admit I'm not a massive fan of that one. Based on the numbers, it appears I'm wrong OK, this one is from a 23 year old young Italian who makes cheeky songs related to modern life and tech and this was quite a big hit. Think "Cliff Richard and the Young Ones - Living Doll" - the older guy, Gianni Morandi, is a bit like the Italian equivalent - not so much for younger people The video is marvellous, I think one of the best I have seen, and the whole thing is hilarious. If you know Italian. But even if you don't, give it a go. He gets captured and forced into making a video with the young guy. "Mi fa volare" = it makes me fly. If you've seen "Gomorrah" (series) you might recognise someone in the video. Fabio Rovazzi featuring Gianni Morandi - Volare ("Fly")

Thank you. I never went away, but I've been on a bit of a mission this year to learn Italian. It's going quite well. Level C1, apparently. I have a tutor in Verona. As a result I've been listening to stacks of Italian stuff. As is probably obvious from my all time favourite record, posted many times (!) I'm rather into those Latin melodies and Italo-house so it's natural for me to investigate and then want to know what the lyrics are. This has meant that this is probably the first year where I've digressed away from dance music a little. I'm getting older, too So in reviewing the year I don't have that many to pick out. This one is rather mindless but rather funky. Haven't been to a club in a fair while but I think this would be decent in that environment. Bingo Players - Beat the Drum .. there's the delightful Ella Eyre on this Latino-inspired track filmed in Mexico.. (Sigala again, those same 90s piano chorus sounds) Sigala & Ella Eyre - Came Here for Love

How Motiv8 would sound if they were still going in 2015. Really old-school piano house sounds.
  14. If you do shop in Debenhams, look out for the 'megaday' or '12 hour spectacular' if it still runs. Used to be about three or four times a year. Memory fails but IIRC it was 20% off everything. It's a good day to pick up designer stuff that is never normally discounted.

Ruby Turner - Living for the City The bass power on the 12" of this is truly something to behold. Shakes the house.

As an example, represses of some albums tend to be worthless, it's the original pressing that's worth the money. Such as that Bowie LP - the pressing I have is the very first orange label copy and it's the "one to have". And some of the Oasis 12" singles - one of those was re-released last year on 12" single, that version is worthless but the original editions can fetch £30. What you find doing this is that some labels have the "catalogue number" on the back of the sleeve making it easy to find, and others only quote it on the vinyl label itself, so you have to pull the thing out of the sleeve and if the inner doesn't have a circular cut-out then you have to pull the vinyl out too in order to get to it. If the thing was bought from HMV and still has the price sticker on it, the number at the bottom left of that sticker is recognised by Discogs. It is essential to get the right version of it when "adding to collection", the biggest clue is the year of release which is prominent on the web page when you locate it. Usually there's only one release of a thing anyway (for the UK market) but sometimes it's necessary to click "All versions" and then scroll down to find the UK version that corresponds with the thing in front of you when the "number" is seemingly nowhere to be found. White-label copies are a good example of this, when there is no catalogue number, for example Picotto/Camisra "Let Me Show You My Lizard" or whatever it is - there isn't even agreement on a title and it has no release number, but they're quite rare in my collection, I have perhaps half a dozen of those.

Sign up at Discogs, then search for each thing - catalogue number is easiest if it's on the sleeve, if it's on the vinyl label it's often easier to just type in artist - title and add LP or 12 at the end depending on what it is. Once you find the thing, click on it, then "Add to Collection". It's a lot faster than it sounds. I've finally managed to track down that Eddy Grant dance cover that they used to play at a hotel in Spain when I was about 16.

Have been putting the record collection into Discogs so as to catalogue the lot and see if any are worth a fortune. Plus it's handy to have when I'm at my PC and want a list of stuff to pick something to listen to. Sadly, the only ones worth fair money are a Bowie LP, Oasis 12" singles, and that Daft Punk picture disc. dtmark-vinyl.xls

  23. That Shpock advert invites people to sell things they "no longer need or want". Applied literally, that would be about 99% of most peoples' possessions.
