Travelling this way should reduce the journey by 7,000km, thereby cutting shipping times from China to Europe by 12 to 15 days. The freighter is expected to take 33 days to reach Europe, arriving in Rotterdam on September 11 after it left the northeastern Chinese port of Dalian on Thursday. The new route, also known as the Northern Sea Route, will take the ship by Russia’s northern coastline and allow it to avoid the busy Suez Canal. So it's going to cut shipping times from China to Europe to 15 days yet it's going to take 33 days? Looks like we will soon be able to get our hands on cheap tat even sooner. durhamborn Posted August 10, 2013 Share Posted August 10, 2013 They take around that now to do Ningbo to Felixstowe so no saving on time.Dalian is the northern port though and the 3rd biggest manufacturing area so could be a small saving on time from there,iv never used Dalian.I cant see many customers booking onto ship going the northern passage route though.Lots of added risk for no gain. In the 50s and 60s the US stationed a long line of radar and missile sites just below the Artic Circle in Canada. They were there to watch for an invasion by Soviet planes or missiles. They eventually cancelled and tore down the stations when they realised that the men inside them were so bored that they were missing test flights flying back and forth above the missile stations.
