Sledgehead
600 jobs go as food factory shuts, 7 Oct 2004 Consumer products giant Unilever said it was closing a Birdseye ready meals factory in Grimsby with the loss of 600 jobs. The group said the plant, which employs mostly part-time workers, was likely to shut during the first quarter of 2005. It said the site, one of three Birdseye factories in the UK, was too small to be competitive in the frozen food market.
Bullish Bear
Cost cutting seems to be gathering momentum in the UK. This can only be bad if you are an indebted householder!
Van
Yeah, they're all going to retrain as professionals and double their salaries to support those spectacular 50%+ price rises that the northern cities have experienced in the last year! rockdoctor
All very interesting, but selecting out announcements of job cuts is not exactly balanced. What about the firms recruiting? I remember Tesco announcing 1000 staff required. Surely the unemployment statistics, whether fiddled or not, will show any change in direction? Don Fuego
This seems to be becoming a daily event, companies announcing that they are axing people here , there and everywhere, yet the news isn't picking this up. I suppose we are the lucky few in that we can surf and are on the look out for such information, but I worry that the whole nation is being hoodwinked into believing the "you've never had it better" mantra. zzg113
rockdoctor, the Tesco jobs were part-time, temporary, seasonal Christmas workers. These are jobs stacking Christmas crackers and sticking tinsel to the walls.
schadenfreude
Tesco is phenomenally successful - one of the best retailers in the world. You have to remember that it isn't a zero sum game - their competitors are losing share, and jobs. Tesco did indeed recently announce a recruitment push - but only for temporary workers for the Christmas period.
chandellina
unemployment figures may be fiddled but it is still extraordinary low by any measure. this will eventually drive up inflation.

Guest Charlie The Tramp
Whoah! Enough already. You guys are starting to depress me!<{POST_SNAPBACK}> Late 70`s job losses were a regular feature on the late night news. Looks like history is repeating itself, normally a sign of things to come. We eventually ended up with 3 million unemployed was it?
rockdoctor
But you have to be careful. The media choose to pick up on a theme, and then you read endless stories on it. The same things may have been going on, but unreported, previously. I remember a few years ago (alright A LOT of years ago) there was a particularly horrible coach crash. After that there was a report of a horrible coach crash every few days - it was as if every coach in the country had suddenly developed dodgy brakes and acquired Keanu Reaves as a driver. he reality was that coaches were always crashing, but it hadn't been 'news' before.
