I assume yes for the moment. I think this is what they mean when they say the clients pay for their yearly licenses. I have asked the CTO if we charge for such things, now just have to wait until he loads up his MSN. We don't talk voice here, MSN is king, sad but true. You wouldn't get away with it in embedded or old-school distributed software. I guess this is the concept that I find baffling at times. Especially seeing cost of the maintenance cycle here at my company. I understood it when we were first starting as there were only 4 of us and we had to rapidly develop software in order to win business, We use to code in C in those days and ended up with GOD function of over 10,000 lines (not my doing), with switches encapsulating further switches with if statements inside those followed by more switches. We still have this code as our base to this day. We sell shrink wrapped type of software across the globe that should work on all computers, well at least the application interface. There are some modules that I understand cannot be done to their entirety but in general, our software here should be more reliable than it is. We have lost a few clients over the years due to these problems as delays in our department have a knock on effect onto their businesses. Also, we have the sale team promising the world to clients and expecting us to have developed this yesterday. I like the challenge but sometimes it's a bit over-the-top. I have produced a reporting application that runs on .net with zero bugs left. We have got a testing team now and it feels remarkably better as the code was organised correctly and designed. We used to go for the cowboy approach. If people would like to see raw Agile development, they should apply to work here. In my company, if someone leaves the company, they are sworn to secrecy and told not to tell anyone at all because this may have negative effects on the team? I'm lucky in that I'm managed by techies who understand what's important and what's not. And also understand how to communicate the commercially important things to techies. All the software engineering techniques you learn about in university is ********. The boss told me that he is very unhappy about me leaving, that people in the company are worried that I'm looking for work and that I'm not allowed to talk to my colleagues about this or if I find a new job. I work in a funny company. They also talk about their reviews openly in my company and tell everyone what they get. It baffles me. I don't work for a traditional English company it seems. I have 4 lodgers all from Colombia who are in London to learn English for 1 year, they are experienced developers working for a reputable Colombian software company. They are limited to 20 hours per week on their visas but you could get 80 hours per week out of them and they don't want silly money. There english is very good, they develop in english. What I don't get, you said they have jobs already, they are on STUDENT VISAS, they shouldn't be seeking employment in the U.K. They can do part-time work but not full-time work. You'll find that in business, people don't want to invest in individuals that may leave the country at the end of their term. A sad but true fact. So next time you start name calling think about it. Go to a recruitment agent then, see if they would be interested in the magnificant four. I have a position that they can take. They all work for the same company in Colombia. Their company sent them to London to improve their English as they do alot of business with the US. I was just trying to help them out, I don't get anything out of it except some self-satisfaction. I know that but that's how we employ. We also don't employ from the U.K. Not my choosing, ask my boss. He recruits from France only. It sounds like someone could give you a break too. I've been in the system for long enough to feel guilty that I earn much more that the new guys. You know how bad guilt is when you are in the pub and they offer you a beer. I cannot take their beer. It's just wrong. I believe we control our own destiny and I'm on my way out. Got me a recruitment agent, need to get me an updated C.V. and find what the duke does interesting. So need to send my C.V. there. Everyone deserves a break, indeed. No one employs temp IT engineers from what I know but there is alway someone.
