  1. Astute observation. There's a lot of people of here who are absolutely wracked over what other people have and do then lay claim to some moral high ground. Why would you honestly give enough of a f**k what car someone else drives, how they dress or even, Christ!, what sunglasses they wear to write about it on the Internet?
  2. Churchill won the 1951 GE after Atlee's bonkers Labour government ran out of money.
  3. Manufacturing is still 16% of GDP and manufacturing output by value is the highest it's ever been. Why is manufacturing so awesome?
  4. Anywhere that anybody normal would emigrate to has similar or worse salary/house price ratio.
  5. It's got nothing to do with strength or weakness, but commuting any distance by car in LA every working day is f***ing miserable. First, the traffic is f***ed. Second, the majority of people there are horrible drivers because they come from places where a donkey is the dominant transportation technology. Where are you going to be working in LA? If we know that we can do a meaningful comparison on places with a feasible commute distance.
  6. I think the difference is that you could get the train if you lived in Harpenden and worked in London - not an option in Westlake. Burbank or Glendale would be a better comparison, IMO.
  7. Westlake Village isn't really commuting distance for all of LA. The Valley... maybe... if you learn to love the 101. No way you could drive into Santa Monica or El Segundo every day without going mental. I used to live in Agoura Hills which is near there and not many brave souls commuted any substantial depth into LA.
  8. I don't think it can be enforced. People don't change and especially people in their 80s don't change. FIL will p!ss it up the wall.
  9. Sell to rent - the ethical form of property speculation. Back in the good old days HPC.co.uk was chokka with people STRing to cash in on the imminent crash. Except it didn't happen for another 4-5 years. It was LOL.
  10. If you go back and search you can find 2004 and 2005 STRs who lauded for their acumen and foresight on here.
  11. That's the exact opposite of what the article says. Big bike sales are holding up, it's sales of the 50cc pieces of sh!t that have fallen off a cliff. My observation of bikes is that people who like them will give up a great deal in order to keep it or get or get a new one.
  12. What do you mean? He shouldn't say what he believes just because some people don't agree with it? What did he actually say that was factually untrue?
  13. It's TLDR. Nobody, least of all your MP, is going to wade through all that.
  14. I agree. Why should I pay through the nose for fat chavs who live on chips and Silk Cuts? FuÑk the NHS.
  15. I don't get the distinction. The OP is saying the builder is a greedy c**t because he won't come down 5% and the builder is probably thinking the OP is a greedy c**t because he won't meet the asking. Both parties are trying to maximise the outcome of the transaction for their own personal gain. Neither of them has any moral superiority to the other.
  16. It's an irregular verb conjugated HPC.co.uk style: I am realistic, he is greedy.
  17. Aren't you just as greedy for offering less? What's the difference?
  18. Have you ever been to France? There are 5.5 million unemployed native French speakers there who can't get a job. What are you going to do for a living?
  19. Let's just have a look at what you wrote: You put Premise A & B in quotation marks even though nobody has ever said either of those things. You're just making up two completely imaginary quotes ascribing them both to some vaguely defined group of people because you feel it's the type of thing they might say then criticising them for it. It's a dishonest and frankly Ñ•hit debating technique.
  20. Except you apparently did make it up. Has any real person ever said or written both your A and B statements?
  21. I think most people would go for the lowest price they thought they could get away with. I do think that some HPC.co.uk would justify it by passing some sort of moral judgment on the seller. ie they are a "chav" or "greedy" or drive an X5 "mewmobile". Whatever gets you through the night...
  22. He quite liked it but then he was a raging p!ss artist before he got there rather than becoming one there like everyone he worked with. Most of the expats seem to develop "rock fever" after a few months as it's one of the most densely populated places on Earth. In answer to the OP: I'm going to Australia as I like nice weather, open spaces and don't give a f*ck about culchur.
  23. One of the guys I went to university with worked for a bank there. It has a property market that makes London seem sane. He was paying a fortune for an apartment the size of a VW Polo.
  24. I'm not quite getting the sequence of events. You put in a (presumably low) offer six months ago, got knocked back, went back yesterday, got kb'ed again and are now bitter that you didn't get your **** kissed into the bargain?
