Harry Monk
What do we all think of this then? http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-2134915/Queen-brightens-gloom-names-Gloriana-royal-barge-built-100-years.html Personally I think it looks like a cross between a gippo caravan and a fairground ride, and if I spent a million quid on a boat, I'd expect it to at least have an engine. Any thoughts?

Any thoughts? It's based on a royal barge that did actually float on the Thames, as painted by Canaletto in the 18th century, according to the text. Most royal boats or vehicles at that time were designed in a really decadent rococo style, lots of gilt and gingerbread. Look at the Lord Mayor's coach, for example. I suspect the over-wrought decorations of caravans and fairgrounds ultimately derive from this fashion. It's hideous for sure, but it's traditional, and ultimately not a lot of practical use, just like the monarchy.

Being of libertarian inclination, I think it's excellent Nothing fogs the issue of being subjects of inbreds in pantomime costumes like when they hide their true nature
happy_renting
The sort of thing the Royals love. A kitsch ruritanian confection harking back to a bogus provenance from some mythical shangri-la age of benevolent feudalism. The proles and tourists will love it. SNACR
If the person running this barge ride short changes the Duke of Edinburgh and tries to steal his bird I'II view it as a bargain. Sccrrream if you want to go faster, your Maj.
