interestrateripoff
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-13218582 The firms building the Royal Navy's two new aircraft carriers say the cost has risen by at least £1bn and possibly almost £2bn, the BBC has learned. The rise could push the final cost of HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince of Wales to about £7bn - much more than the original £5.2bn deal. At least one of the carriers is to be redesigned to take the US Navy's version of the Joint Strike Fighter. The Ministry of Defence said no final decisions had been taken. But it said it believes the final cost of the 60,000-tonne vessels will be closer to £6bn. The ships - which are being built by the Aircraft Carrier Alliance, the members of which are BAE systems, Babcock and Thales - were saved from defence cuts under the coalition government - because it would cost more to cancel the projects than proceed with them. The government agreed to change the design of one, or both, of the aircraft carriers to make them compatible with different aircraft than those originally envisaged. Out of interest would it cost £2bn to cancel the carriers? Once more poor planning to blame and the fact the govt couldn't cost a p155 up in a brewery. Save me from the madness!
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-13218582 Out of interest would it cost £2bn to cancel the carriers? Once more poor planning to blame and the fact the govt couldn't cost a p155 up in a brewery. Who said anything about poor planning? I think it was very much deliberate planning to make it more expensive to cancel then proceed by a Government who knew they were on their way out and wanted to safe guard jobs in one of their strong seats. 200p
It'll be a good return on investment. We've spent a trillion on the banking system. A couple of billion on a couple of capital ships is a drop in the ocean.
aa3
Good point, if only we had this kind of scrutiny on bailouts for the bankers. Just a few months back David Cameron gave £7 billion pounds as part of the Irish bailout. And there wasn't the slightest concern over that. Oh, there was plenty of concern...just the MSM refused to report it.
exiges
So long as those extra billions get spent in the UK it's not an issue in the grand scheme.
Guest eight
So long as those extra billions get spent in the UK it's not an issue in the grand scheme. I like the way things are rounded to whole billions these days. That's one thousand million pounds margin for error. eight
aa3
Oh, there was plenty of concern...just the MSM refused to report it. I cancelled my TV 10 years ago. Unfortunately for most people, if it didn't happen on tv, it didn't happen. Just remember, Royal Wedding, Syria, Global Warming, Olympics.. don't notice your lying eyes how some of your mates are out of work and your kids can't find decent employment. SarahBell
Like all good grand designs projects that got horribly over budget - it's because they changed their mind part way through and wanted something different.
