It is simply jobs for the girls and boys. They will all be nu-lab Blairite clones with their extreme views on social policy. such as compulsory parenting orders, sending parents to prison if children do not attend their state indoctrination classes, giving parish councillors (whoever the ****** they are ) permission to hand out ASBOs to anti-social neighbours, these communist style summer camps for children to learn citizenship lessons, Citizen X classes in school, curfews for unrluy children, compulsory treatment for anyone considered to be a potentially anti-social citizen, sure start schemes for parents to learn how to be model parents I could go on and on with the sociologically based left-wing crap they are now inflicting on us but I wont . well i will as i can think of it. ps i know a lot of this shit also happens under fascism but most of the labour party are socialists (in the social policy sphere if not the economic one) so it is absurd to call it fascism. I was ever elected as an MP, I'd take whatever the average salary is and give the rest to various campaigns for change. I am seriously worried that there are a number of members of this site who have extremely unpleasant (and unrepresentative and untrue) views about anything to do with the public sector. I should add that I don't actually work in the public sector. I have in the past and most of the people I worked with were very good and underpaid in comparison to the private sector. Now if you want to live in a society where almost everything is private, taxes are lower, charity treies, and fails, to look after the poor, old, disable, unlicky, etc, then that's your problem. I wouldn't want to go there, and I think we have seen an example of that sort of society in America over the last few weeks. Luckily, most Brits don't want to go there either, ehich is why the Conservatives are rather less popular than a does of the clap. by the way, I don't think the Guardian is quite as supportive of Blair as you seem to believe. IMO one of the reasons the Tories are considered unelectable is because of their reactionary social views. Labour generally has been tolerant. There are a number of elements on the Left who annoy the hell out of me, and I certainly don't want to imply that all is rosy. I know its not. Some public sector jobs seem a bit, well ,pointless, but I also see some private secot jobs that are equally pointless, and generally better paid. I do think we need to improve the social sphere. Anti social behavior has many causes but, in part, I think the me-first attitudes the late 1980s have not exactly helped us as a society. Others blame the permissiveness of the 1960s (which i don't agree with). However, whatever the causes, I do think that talented educationalists, local authority leaders, and so on are a necessary part of the solution. i would rather my taxes went towards them than funding increasing numbers of prison cells. If one gets into arguments about a job's "worth" it is very difficult to come up with objective results. What would be good is if knee jerk attacking of the public sector is left on the pages of the Mail and Express.

Some parts of the private sector are comptetitive, but some are not. The oil industry is a cartel, ditto supermarkets; private companies have been awarded lucrative contracts for running public services with no actual risk (look at the railways, the Tube, anything done by Capita, Again, such phrases as "cess pit" are pretty ignorant and get us nowhere. A problem of the public sector is often to measure success. Quite right too. Depends which civil liberties. I am totally against ID cards (no New Labour lacky me!) but would like to deport Islamic fundamentalists who stir up racial hatrid. As for all of the criminal offences, i cannot comment this evening. My girlfriend, and a couple of pints, are waiting for me in the pub. Bon fin de semaine.
