An advertisement for a Walkers crisps competition offering 20,000 holidays has been banned after complaints the trips were almost impossible to win.

The "spell and go" promotion invited people to collect and swap letters from codes on crisp packs to spell the names of 26 possible holiday destinations.

But customers protested that letters C, D or K seemed impossible to get.

...Destinations on offer included New York, Hong Kong or Sri Lanka. Less than 800 of the 20,000 holidays were won, Walkers confirmed.....

Lol there's nothing more enticing than a free holiday.

Reminds me of the famous Hoover ****-up when they offered a free flight to anyone who bought a vacuum cleaner, nearly bankrupted them

Well - it's the reverse. With the Hoover one, they guaranteed a flight - this was a bearable cost based on known purchase patterns and pull-through (ie, how many will actually want the flight). But it turned out people did unreasonable things like bring purchases forwards and actually want to have the flight.

With this one, there were 20,000 holiday codes printed (well, codes that gave unusual letters, but same thing) but the promotion engagement in the end was low - so only 1 in 20 of those holiday codes were entered into the website.

Clever really - they know that ultimately competition engagement is low, so they can offer a great prize knowing that most of it won't be claimed.
