Charlie The Tramp Returns Posted July 9, 2010 Share Posted July 9, 2010 Nick Clegg wants Murderers and Rapists to have the vote PRISONERS including rapists and murderers could get the right to vote in a move championed within the Cabinet by Nick Clegg, the Government said yesterday.The Deputy Prime Minister wants the Lib Dem policy put into law as soon as possible to bring Britain into line with human rights rulings from European judges. Polling booths for all inmates would be set up in jails around Britain. But the concession to the Lib Dems within the coalition Government is bound to anger Conservatives. Surely those that have ended up in prison have effectively declared that they do not want to be a part of our society, and have given up their right to have a say in how we are governed. Most criminals have to have offended a great many times before they are given a prison sentence. By the time they actually receive a custodial sentence they have proven ‘beyond all reasonable doubt’ that they are not going to respect the laws government pass any way – so why should they have any input at all in the making of those laws. Clegg wants us to be brought into line with the rest of the EU, at the expense of what the British people think, and how offended most of the UK electorate will be at this ridiculous suggestion – no change their then. Maybe he thinks it would be to the Lib/Dems advantage. Terrorists in Prison who try to blow up innocent people should have the vote, the mind boggles. Everyone says crap like "How civilised a society is can be judged on how it treats its poorest/elderly/pets/criminals" That DOESNT mean restoring every single little freedom to the scum of the earth. Not that long ago, a man could be jailed for having sex with another man, and be denied the vote as a result. Now that is not the case. Even in the case of murder, it isn't always clear cut. People sometimes get sent down for murder because they killed someone in self defence, and not everyone agrees with these decisions. Similarly with rape, an 16 year old could be jailed for statutory rape for having consensual sex with his 15 year + 364 day old girlfriend. Usualy the police have a policy of not prosecuting in these cases, but they are well within their rights to do so. We do have more prisoners per head of population than any other country in the word except for the USA. We certainly don't have the lowest crime rates, so we must be doing something wrong. In practice, many NuLab voters will never pay taxes - including duties, which they avoid through the black market + income taxes, because they're on benefits/the game. Prisoners should have the right to vote, for every murderer there are a thousand grannies that didn't pay their council tax, they are still human and still British citizens and they should have the vote. Hey, if the murdere/rapist is paying from his (or her!) own pocket, why not?<br><br>The original idea of imprisonment was to keep the accused locked up until trial and punishment. During imprisonment the accused provided for himself, and if he had enough wealth he could live as normal apart from restrictions on movement. If he was poor, then he probably died from disease before the trial came on.<br><br>Sadly, we no longer have punishment: it has been replaced with imprisonment, and somehow the taxpayer has to stump up for the godawful bureaucracy. "Jail is undesirable"..... and it needs to be. We already have prisons with high proportions of foreigners, who probably hailed from places where our jails are like the "Ritz" to them. Do they vote in the constituency where the prison is located or get a postal vote to where they live? Many are of no fixed abode so what then? They could swing marginal constituencies.
