Bin it and get yourself Sun's Virtual Box. You can then install Windows 9x etc in that to play your old games. If they are very old DOS games, then get yourself a little program called Dos Box. Try taking the battery out and just running it on mains. If it still doesn't work can you get an alternative battery? Any flashing LED's? What make of Thinkpad? Failing that and you want data off it, it's a hard disk piggy back m'larky jobby, assuming that hasn't died as well. I can also atest to DOSbox, piece of p1ss to use and work's on pretty much any old DOS/Windows prog. Or how about running MS Virtual PC on your Vista box? merville Posted July 3, 2009 Share Posted July 3, 2009 If you have a friend with a linux box with a decent amount of hard drive space, you can pick up an external 2.5" drive enclosure for under £10 here. All you need do is make an image of the drive using dd and you can then use the drive image you have just created with VMware, Virtual Box or Qemu. You will need a big capacity drive on your new computer, but at least you will have all your programs / password etc intact. If the machine is completely dead it could be anything - processor, power supply, battery, motherboard etc. Best bet is take it into a good PC specialist [NOT PC World] and see if they will fix it on a "no fix / not cost effective /no fee" basis. That way you will not get hammered for an expensive repair that may not be worthwhile long term. Might be worth looking at these guys if they have any bargains (I have used them in the past and they are pretty good) Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

The local PC chap couldn't fix it either [and no I'm not taking it to PC world]. Had a look on the numerous tech forums. Looks like it is a well known problem with the Thinkpad series - with a overcharged capicitor or shot video card [if that's the case its beyond saving] Tried the unhook battery, and unplug ac adaptor and hold on button trick, has not worked.
