  1. Landlords evict tenants who challenge them. Whilst section 21 of the AST exists they can keep doing it. For some a challenge could be a tenant repeatedly requesting a tenancy agreement when it's the landlord's policy not to do this - about half in my experience. Individual tenants have no power; legislation on landlords is the only way to reign them in.
  2. Boomers must be kept in the comfort they have become accustomed to.
  3. Given the average EA's animosity to unemployed people it will be interesting to see how they cope once they join their ranks.
  4. Forgot to say that as well as being expensive a lot of these flats have been unlet for several months. One listing even has an offer of half-priced tenant fees as well as £100 off first month's rent. Pointless if no-one can afford the £475 every month though.
  5. The change.org petition by Pam Potter that's linked on there is hilarious. 'Govt need to let us off tax increase or we will evict tenants and put up rents'. Theres only so many tenants who will be able to afford their increased rents though, and they can't all have them. I am seeing this where I live. LHA rate is 280-360ish a month for 1 bedroom and rents are around 400-475.
  6. Agreed. You'd be surprised how many tenants prefer to stay as second class citizens though. When I've tried to stand up to a rogue landlord and I've tried to get some of their other tenants on board they have blocked it and called me a trouble-maker. This is despite suffering similar issues as me and doing as much complaining about the landlord behind their back as I did...but when it comes time to get the council involved suddenly the other tenants are on the side of the landlord! You'd be amazed how many tenants' websites talk down to their audience as well, telling them that what their landlord wants is more important than what works for them : "you must let the landlord come round whenever he wants, after all it's his property". Stockholm Syndrome comes to mind.
  7. The arguments for and against basic income are irrelevant. The reason why we should have it was made several centuries ago by Thomas Paine in Agrarian Justice: the aristocracy have dividend up the land for themselves and we deserve compensation for the loss of free use of common land which we all used to enjoy. A land value tax would pay for a citizens' income without having to raise other taxes. This was already established in the 1940s I believe. Conversations about 'benefit scroungers' are divisive and unhelpful. If you want to hate on scroungers then direct it to the royal family, the church and other holders of masses of land who charge the rest of us to use it.

  9. Actually I think they were just being comical, no harm done. Real infantilising of adults would be something like the decision to remove the adult rate of housing benefit from 25+ year olds and put it to 35+ instead. Notice that only works both ways though - I'm sure I was paying tax on my Saturday job when I was 17... but can't get 'adult rate' benefits until my mid 30s. Grrrr. When we start seeing signs in shops saying you now have to prove you are over 35 to buy alcohol we'll know that the govt has completely lost it.
  10. Good morning all, I just joined the forum today. I'm a long-term renter currently living in Ruthin, North Wales. I was born in the 80s so although I have lots of renting experience I don't have much knowledge of how housing bubbles work since as far back as I can remember they have been rising. Lots of things going on right now are confusing; not least this 2 bedroom flat in town that is both up for sale and rent at the same time. I can't understand the reasoning behind this as any tenant will be put off by the prospect of being given notice just 4 months into a tenancy. The sale price doesn't appear to have been reduced and the for let listing has been there for about 6 weeks. Why would the agent put it up for both sale and rent simultaneously? Why would you want a tenant if you're trying to sell? Is this a sign that EAs and LLs are becoming more desperate. Is it a BTLer trying to sell to another BTLer with a sitting tenant? Or is this actually fairly common and I just haven't noticed until now?? Thanks
