  1. has nobody done any digging in this one? usually someone finds the exact address then checks it on nethouseprices. i find it very hard to believe that they got offered well over the asking price. was the offer for real/did they complete?
  2. from the article: At the time the UK government predicted 13,000 workers a year from the new EU member countries would move to the UK for work, but the actual figure of registered workers was about 329,000 in 18 months. According to the latest available figures, for 2004, the overall migration picture saw 359,000 people leave the UK while 582,000 settled in the UK. The figures do not include illegal migrants. they honestly expected only 13000 !
  3. a report on skynews channel http://www.sky.com/skynews/article/0,,15410-1225354,00.html Polish Left Homeless in UK Updated: 11:52, Thursday June 22, 2006 If the headlines are to be believed, the UK is desperately in need of more Polish immigrants to do the jobs that the Brits aren't snapping up. But, as Laurence Lee reports, many Poles are let down when they arrive in the UK. The positive image about Poles and other immigrants from the newly enlarged EU is one of a British economy desperately crying out for these model workers. However the Sky Report found a very different picture for some of the young people who have come to the UK on the promise of work. Increasing numbers are sleeping on the streets and homeless organisations are reporting record pressures on their services. Some believe that if nothing is done about this problem now, we will create a terrible problem - particularly for vulnerable British citizens who need these services. 4. well Lulu you're not content with putting on that surrey accent you now slag off your homeland. the scottish parliament does look like a council estate from the outside but you must go inside to fully appreciate it ( but watch out for falling roof beams) well london got the millenium dome, that cost about a billion
  5. £20k as a newly qualified teacher! under the tories that would have been about £12k
  6. http://www.eveningtimes.co.uk/hi/news/5053838.html Scots telephone voices put the accent on trust EWAN'S voice is top in sounding trustworthy SCOTS have always known their accent is one to be trusted. So it's no surprise to learn people would rather discuss money matters over the phone with an adviser who sounds like actor Ewan McGregor than one like rock icon Ozzy Osbourne. Scots accents have come way out on top once again with consumers across the whole of the UK. A survey on behalf of Glasgow's new Wall Street on the Clyde found that accents really do matter when it comes to financial phone calls. The study found someone with a Scots twang like Ewan or veteran actor Sean Connery is considered more competent too. More than one in five of those questioned rated the Scots accent top. Londoners came second with 17% of votes. And the Scots trounced Geordie, Scouse, Mancunian and even Brummie accents like Ozzy's. They all came bottom of the pile by each pooling just one vote in 50. Even one of Birmingham's famous sons Ozzy Osbourne failed to sway the masses when it came to money issues. It could be why Glasgow has such a thriving financial services sector with more than 9000 jobs alone moving into the district in the last five years." 20/06/06
  7. is the EU population growing? i thought we were facing a demographic timebomb as countries like Italy have a falling birthrate.therefore there are going to be more pensioners with fewer workers. immigrants grow old too ! so immigration is not a viable option !
  8. someone should tell them window tax was abolished years ago. i like the way they tell you that they've done major structural repairs,as if it's a selling point !! i think this is one for DIY S.O.S.
  9. best way to get rich is a tax payer funded job like an MP,Judge or doctor . why is it all the big earning doctors are always german? there was one smug german doctor on TV the other week boasting how he earns £5k a week from the NHS! http://scotlandonsunday.scotsman.com/index.cfm?id=824722006 Doctor's 1,000-mile trip to cover 'opt-out' GPs A GERMAN GP is being flown on a 1,000-mile round trip by the Scottish NHS to work at weekends because local doctors refuse to work out-of- office hours. Dr Fred Hansen, who lives in London, is being paid £100-an-hour to travel to the north of Scotland at taxpayers' expense.
  10. i've always thought the system doesn't make sense.if you have lived in subsidised rented accomodation for say 10 years you are then offered that house to buy at a fraction of market value ! when i was 20 i asked if i could go on the waiting list and was told you've no chance of getting anything-the reason? because my parents had never had a council house !!!!! in other words my family had never got anything free or subsidised from the state therefore i didn't have enough points ! shouldn't it be the other way round? those who have never bothered the council should get priority and those who have had cheap rent for years should go to the back of the queue.and those who have had cheap/free rent should pay full market value if they want to buy a council house, and those on the list should get the discount!
  11. 1 metre, that's approx 3 feet is it not ? must have come as a shock when they tried to fit their suite in . they might have to resort to garden furniture or shop at ikea !
  12. A LEADING estate agent was fined £1000 for saying a living room was one metre bigger than it actually was. Clyde Property says it made an honest mistake after plans for a newly built block of flats in Glasgow were changed slightly. http://www.eveningtimes.co.uk/hi/news/5053116.html
  13. http://www.eveningtimes.co.uk/hi/news/5052991.html THREE thousand homes are to be built in Glasgow in the next five years in a £120million project that will transform the city's skyline. Council leader Steven Purcell today said it would be a "housing revolution" that would see the worst of the multi-storeys and other rundown properties demolished. He revealed 2400 homes would be built by 2011 by housing associations at a cost of £96m. That is on top of the completion of 600 homes where work is already under way in a scheme worth £24m. It is also in addition to plans unveiled by Glasgow Housing Association last September for 2000 new flats and houses. Mr Purcell said: "This is nothing short of a housing revolution for the people of Glasgow. "At long last, we will be able to consign the dark days of damp and threatening high-rise living to the dustbin of history." The rundown multi-storeys and other dilapidated properties will be replaced by socially-rented homes, with local communities deciding what kind of houses they will be and influencing where they will be built.
  14. an aerial rigger once told me it was cheaper to drill a hole in 2p coins and use them as washers rather than buy them!

  18. borrowing money to pay the deposit on a new house from a company that charges you an upfront "admin fee" ???! http://www.bbc.co.uk/watchdog/reports/fina..._20060214.shtml 14 February 2006 Watchdog has featured many rogue loan companies in the past, each with their own methods of getting hold of customers' money. ABS X-Press Loans has a much simpler way of getting your cash. Lewis Hagra-Hammond and his partner Amy Stevens wanted a loan so they could buy a house. They approached ABS X-Press to help pay the deposit on a house they'd found. Sarah Woodman and Royston Finch needed money to consolidate their debts. They also applied to ABS X-Press after seeing an advert in the back of a magazine. Both couples paid ABS X-Press Loans an administration fee of £99.50, but the loans never materialised. Instead of paying money into customers' accounts, ABS X-Press Loans was taking it out. Sarah and Royston lost £2,000. Lewis and Amy had almost £10,000 stolen. Watchdog wanted to find out more about the people behind ABS X-Press and its director, Ken McKeon.
  19. well the landlord rents it out to idiots without a thought for nieghbours,he just wants his cash.obviously he didn't leave the water running then pass out,but the least he could do is give us a valid phone number to protect his and our property. as for building regulations, the tenement is over 100 years old,yes it dates back to the time of debtor's jails, kids sweeping chimneys and slum landlords who would through the poor out on the streets (the good old days).i don't think a wet room was an option as inside toilets were a luxury! i think the fool here is the landlord as he(or his insurer) is getting chased for the money and i'm getting a nice new kitchen and bathroom.
