Would you pay, I would and leave UK FOREVER lol

Nobel Laureate Gary Becker says immigrants should pay

Professor Gary Becker, a Nobel prize-winning economist, will argue on Thursday that immigrants should pay for the right to settle in Britain and the United States. Professor Gary Becker will say that it would be up to individual governments to set a price, adding that a charge of $50,000 (£34,000) per immigrant could generate $50bn a year in the US. The same sum could generate about £17bn a year in Britain, based on Office for National Statistics data which showed 503,000 immigrants arrived between October 2008 and September 2009 ********while they are at it, why don't they legalise prostitutes, a huge tax earner*********

  • @ mark
l would also like to see the legalisation sex workers and taxation of their earnings, also I’d like all drugs legalised and supplied by NHS (no free prescriptions for non medically beneficial drugs) …. and while I’m at it all second incomes derived from letting rooms / houses taxed properly. ( I know a landlord who insists on cash only, and no DHS )

As far as immigrants paying to settle, I dont see a problem with this for purely economic migrants. How many Chinese, Afghan, Somali and Kurdish men arrive in the UK with anything more than the clothes on their backs ?

  • It kind of sounds morally questionable, but the more you think about it, it’s not dissimilar to the concept that students pay a loan because they get a ‘leg up’ the quality-of-life ladder. In the meantime, you’re not discounting the notion that you’re allowing people to seek refuse from a crooked country, which *is* morally correct, but that you contribute a little more. I don’t see the moral problem with that, as long as it’s done as ‘student loan’ type of affair – they pay back the charge as they earn it.

Practically this exists already at a much higher price. I believe it is something like that if I buy and hold $1m US government bond or I start a business that employs 5 people I can come and stay

  • It’s amazing how the immigrants are always targeted during a downturn. Most immigrants come to make a better life for themselves and their family. Those on benefits and creaming the system are often long established citizens who seem to do this generation after generation.Immigrants are easy targets IMHO.

  • Yes I agree with fjcruiser. Everyone blames the immigrants but if you look at the facts, what type of person owns the majority of the land and property and wealth in this country? I think you call them the Upper Class. If UK charges people to come to live here, then surely that should apply to every country in the world where British people go to live.
A lot of people born here are very lazy, they don’t want to do the jobs that immigrants do, they don’t take advantage of of the education system. They just sit there, bigots the lot of them.
I blame Mrs Thatcher for it all

So what – many criminals have the same motivation for committing their crimes. The fact is that an immigrants “better life” is at the expense of a worse life for many people already here in the form of overcrowding, overstretched public services, congested roads, HPI etc etc etc.

The fault is not with the immigrants its with the policy makers that allow them to come here.

The fact that people here are not properly motivated is a fault of our over generous benefit system. Give them same choice as the average economic migrant is accustomed to: work or starve, and you’l see a remarkable transformation in attitude.

  • I also agree with fjcruiser. It is just another classic example of extracting money from those who can afford to pay. I know of British citizens, born and bred, who have never worked a day in their life and cream the benefits systems. This has been carried through the family for 2 generations so far and doesn’t look as if it will change.

  • Think the logic here might be slightly flawed… Do they really think that if we had been charging 34K per immigrant, that every single one of the 503,000 would still have come here…

  • Then indigenous Australians (Torres Strait Islanders) should charge White British Migrants 34K for right to live in Australia & Red Indian Americans should charge European Migrants for 34K. Also, Maoris of New Zealand should charge a fee for British Migrants who settled there from elsewhere.

And the current British are not indigenous people on the island too.

Good to hear that. Then 90% of the British population is liable to the fee, ha ha!

  • I have a better idea, scrap all social spending, i.e end all free housing, benefits, health care, etc. Those here will be forced to work. And the people that move here will only be the hard working kind that everyone says they want.

If you offer people something for nothing, that people will take it, and you will attract more people who would would like to do so.

Maybe overly harsh, but you see the point. UK plc is skint. we will all be living in a different country in 5 years, immigrants and citizens a like.

  • Fantastic, if this is the case, my country (Spain), will be able to claim for 50000 euros for each british living in my country (between 1.5 million and 2 million people?), which for sure will fix the messwWe’ve got down here!

I think this is a stupid idea. What I would do is hope that the immigrants pay their £34K in tax over the next few years.
The same applies to University fees. Why not have a higher tax rate for these people to speed up the repayment ?

What I would do is have a ten year (minimum) probabationary period in which the slightest law breaking or tax evasion
resulted in them being sent back to their own country the day they were prosecuted.
Has anyone else noticed how the majority of mortgage fraud seems to be carried out by people with foriegn names.
Of course it might be that 1% of people with these names are giving the rest a bad name.

  • OK: 2 problem here – those who are so desperate to come here won’t have the money to pay. Those who can pay won’t want to come here to pay – just in case one needs reminding, Asian/Aussie economy is growing at 5-10% and it is 0% here in UK with 50% top tax + VAT + petrol taxes+ expensive housing etc….. Does the clever professor seriously think that people wants to pay $50k to get themselves into this ?

  • On second thought – I think the UK gov is already charging the fee on those who are non domicile here and wants to be exempted from UK taxes. They pay an annual fee of £30k…..

  • To: mr g

It depends on what you meant by unskilled economic migrant.

The cleaner in my office is from Slovakia and he just knows to speak “good morning”, “are you alright” etc, does he count as unskilled economic migrant?

UK is adopting an open door policy to embrace every Eastern Europe citizens where they are competing with native British for work rather Asian migrants.

Those illegal Asian migrants are basically working in Thai, Chinese or Vietnam restaurants or oriental grocery stores where they normally won’t hire people who can’t speak Thai, Mandarin or Vietnam language. And most of those Asian migrants do possess a reasonable command of England (better than Eastern European).

I didn’t make it clear but I was referring to economic migrants from, lets say politely, more under developed countries than those of eastern Europe or south and east Asia.

To all the people saying that we English feel certain jobs are below us that is total crap and an insult to people like myself who has now been out of work for 18 months. I have applied to do supermarket work, warehousing etc but get told (if I actually hear anything at all) that I’m overqualified. All the factory work is only open to Eastern Europeans because they conduct all the safety briefings in Polish – therefore you need to be fluent in Polish just to get a simple agency job. I’d love to come off the dole but when agencies can only offer the odd day here and there and will not commit to even a week’s employment it’s impossible – I have bills to pay and a mortgage to find. It’s fxxk all to do with work ethic, the cold hard fact is the Poles work for minimum wage were as before the jobs would have been paid higher. It’s not a level playing field, the Poles drive Polish registered cars (no UK road tax), live four to house (like my neighbours) so only need to find £150 per month for housing where as I’m trying to pay a £500+ per month mortgage.

Give a fair day’s pay for a fair day’s work and you’ll find the Brits will do these jobs, but at the moment it’s a case of simply not being able to afford to work with the current devalued salaries. Can you see Cameron changing it? Probably not as it’s all his old Etonian buddies who are profiting from the cheap labour.

  • These is nothing “fair” about paying you £500+ per month for stacking shelves.

There are 600 million people in India earning less than $1.50 per day. If your “skills” amount to being able to stack shelves, why should you deserve more than $1.50?

  • Do you know Labour has signed up to United Nation’s Gateway Protection Programme where UK needs to accept refugees (those verified refugees status by UN) to come into UK for resettlement?

This is in addition to the existing route for asylum seekers. There is no English language requirement for Refugees. As far as I remember the annual quota is 500. Unlike genuine Asylum seekers where most of than are highly educated (some are human rights solicitor in their home country) but persecute for political reason who could easily find work in UK, those refugees do not have the necessary skills (trade nor English language) to work here and just being on the benefits register after arrival and forever.

  • I with with easybetman. Don’t over estimate the attractiveness of Britain to economic migrants. Facing rising VAT, income tax, high unemployment, rising rental, rising costs of living and deteriorating standards of living, why should they get themselves into this mess?

I rather see more African, Middle East and South Asia migrants heading to China and Hong Kong for resettlement. There are more than 20,000 illegal migrants in Shenzhen running small businesses of their own. They buy cheap clothes, mobile phones and daily essential stuffs from China for reselling to home town in Africa or India/Middle East.
