Did anyone see this last night? if not watch it on the web

Spain: Paradise Lost

In this new two-part series for ITV1 we see that, for some Britons, life in Spain is a dream come true, while for others the dream has become a nightmare. In episode one the series shows how the property crash in Spain has been a financial and personal disaster for some, including Wally Tynan, who says: “I wish to God I'd never heard of Spain,” and the Segal family who have lost their dream family home.

  • Is this some sort of bear trick. These programmes are one year old. They were transmitted in 2009.

  • Yeap I did….I do not have much sympathy I’m afraid. I have family in Spain who have lived their for over 30 years. The growth in development was driven by greed, a weak Euro and the availability of easy credit particularly for UK borrowers who were the hardest hit. The Germans and Dutch saw th writing on the wall and started selling before the market turned(the Germans did have another incentice as their government had a purge on undeclared assets and citizens where threatened with large fines from the taxman if they did not declare property ownership outside of Germany!).

Most Brits follow a like lambs to the slaughter and had they not used the developers lawyers (and droves did) they would have soon learnt about the massive risks – great time to buy well, another 18 months maybe!

  • A friend of mine had an apartment on the Costas. He tells the tale of sitting on his balcony sipping his g & t one fine evening, while gazing out over the surrounding area. It suddenly struck him that new and part built blocks of holiday flats extended as far as the horizon – all soon to be needing buyers. He sold his apartment 2 weeks later.

  • I watched it too, the odd thing was the woman rich from her divorce trying to “buy a bargain”, it’s was as if she didn’t care how the asking price related to it’s true value, she wanted to offer 30% less regardless.

I’m all for pushing for a good deal, but she seemed to be loving others misfortune.

  • A lot of crooks out there, dodgy laws too especially if you are a foreigner.Spain is a minefield for non spaniards. Also a lot of Britits took out mortgages in the UK to fund their property purchase. they obviously did not think about the currency risk and the fact the Euro would appreciate by 30% against the £ in such a short time….It was obvious to most but still people always seem to follow that mantra that “this time it’s different”….
