Let’s not kid ourselves!

It's ridiculous to pretend there won't be cuts

There is a moment in Nineteen Eighty-Four when Winston Smith realises that “in the end the Party would announce that two and two made five, and you would have to believe it...the logic of their position demanded it”. The Labour Party reached that moment last Wednesday when Gordon Brown told it that his plans to cut real spending on public services and halve capital spending equalled more “Labour investment”.

  • And, of course, the Badger’s job was never under threat – trust me, I’m your Prime Minister.

  • At a convivial dinner party on Saturday, attended by some very learned Cambridge University historians; the question was raised ‘has there ever been a worse Prime Minister?’

A lengthy discussion ensued, discussing former First Lords, some of whose names I barely knew.

Out of the 50 – odd candidates, many had failed, had been corrupt, or had made serious errors of judgment; but the consensus was that none had exhibited such shameless mendacity and lack of honour as the current incumbent.

So the answer to the question was: No.

    3. uncle tom – how about the last one who murdered 600,000+ Iraq’s

I suppose the dinner party would not be so ‘convivial’ if someone raised mass murder instead of a few lies about britain being a world leader in anything but debt.

  • Matt,

There wasn’t a lot of enthusiasm for TB – I recall the words ‘gullible’ and ‘delusional’ being used. That he convinced himself that being GWB’s puppet was a good thing to do is the strongest evidence of that.

As Brown didn’t oppose the Iraq war, and made several trips to the US at the time the WMD lies were being promulgated, he can’t be excused a share of the responsibility.
